Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are the elements to consider when choosing between Lazard M&A in Paris and JPM IBD in Dubai:

  1. Career Focus:

    • Lazard M&A: Specializes in M&A, which can provide deep expertise in mergers and acquisitions.
    • JPM IBD: Offers a broader range of investment banking services, which might include M&A, but also other areas like equity, debt, and corporate derivatives.
  2. Geographical Preference:

    • Paris: A major financial hub in Europe with a strong focus on M&A.
    • Dubai: A growing financial center in the Middle East with unique opportunities in emerging markets.
  3. Brand Name and Prestige:

    • Lazard: Known for its strong reputation in M&A.
    • JPMorgan: Has a significant global brand name and prestige, which can be advantageous for future career moves.
  4. Long-term Career Goals:

    • Consider where you want to be in 10+ years. If you see yourself specializing in M&A, Lazard might be the better choice. If you prefer a broader range of opportunities, JPMorgan could be more suitable.
  5. Exit Opportunities:

    • Both firms offer strong exit opportunities, but the specific nature of these opportunities might differ. Lazard's focus on M&A could lead to roles in private equity or corporate development, while JPMorgan's broader focus might offer a wider range of exit options.
  6. Personal Fit:

    • Reflect on your personality and interests. M&A attracts a certain personality type, while coverage roles attract a different type. Knowing which environment you thrive in can help make the decision easier.

In summary, the choice between Lazard M&A in Paris and JPM IBD in Dubai depends on your career focus, geographical preference, brand name considerations, long-term career goals, exit opportunities, and personal fit.

Absolutely Lazard Paris no question. Easiest line of reasoning is that you’ll have a much better opportunity to move to the Middle East with “foreign” experience, if ultimately that’s something you want. SWFs and big PE firms there will be very accessible if you have the Lazard Paris experience. Meanwhile if you go to Dubai now, you’ll have a hard time coming back to Paris or Europe in general.

BBs in the Middle East aren’t as important or active. The experience you’ll get from Lazard can’t be matched in this case. You’ll be learning much more in Paris.

Paris is also a much better city than Dubai in my opinion.
