Lenovo for Finance Hardos (2021)

Hi Monkeys,

Incoming IBD SA here. I understand that my firm will likely provide a dedicated work laptop, but I'm still looking for a Lenovo for personal use (macs are a no-go, and comparable windows devices like the Dell XPS don't have dedicated keys for pgup, pgdn, etc). Which Lenovo model do you all recommend? I'm something of a tech nerd (LTT viewer), but I still can't make heads or tails of their Thinkpad T or X lineup.

The only real spec preference is an AMD CPU since I'm knowledgeable enough to customize RAM and SSD. Also, I'm not looking for a powerhouse workstation that'll have 2 hrs of battery life lol. The most power I'll need is (MAYBE) a dGPU for League whenever I can squeeze it in (but let's be honest, most modern mobile CPUs could run League at high no problemo).

Best,

Your Fellow Monkey

Idk about gaming but you won’t find many better laptops than the X1 Carbon. I have two, one for work and one for personal use

I bought an X1 Carbon at the start of 2020, and it’s one of the best laptops I’ve ever used. That said, make sure you get an extended warranty with it.

As soon as my 1-year warranty expired, I started running into battery issues. Turns out I have a faulty processor that’ll cost $600+ to fix. I’ve seen some people online say that it’s a bug from the new Windows update, it could also be a 1 in 1000 type of issue. Either way, repair costs can be quite high so just a heads up.

Soldered RAM was a dealbreaker for me, and I went with the P1G2 (not what you’re looking for, though). So definitely something to keep in mind when selecting RAM. Regardless, look into throttlestop (thinkpad subreddit has some good guides) to optimize out-of-the-box battery performance, fan usage and heat, etc.

I have a Yoga 7 14ITL5. 12 GB of RAM is a huge difference compared to the 8 I had on my old Mac, and this was like a third of the price.

If you can wait it out, there are some absurdly good Black Friday sales (e.g. Best Buy) - you really should not have to pay sticker price.

I personally would use an opportunity like Black Friday to spend the same amount of money in your budget for a better PC rather than pocketing the extra cash and saving on a cheaper PC. It's worth it.

I do feel like Mac's have better batteries, but I'm not going to be working at my local coffee shop anytime soon.
