has anyone noticed that half of all bankers out there end up ordering a glass of maker's when they go out? when did it become so popular? it seems like the de facto liquor these days, but my guess is that half the guys who order it will never order a wild turkey, woodford, or any other type of bourbon that's just as good if not better for the same price.

Digression: How is it that there are bartenders who don't know what a whiskey neat is?
Dwight: Whiskey neat please.
Bartender: A whiskey and what?
Dwight: Just a whiskey.
Bartender: Well what do you want with it? Coke?
Dwight: No coke. Just straight whiskey. In a glass.
Bartender: Oh ok. (drops ice cubes in glass then pours whiskey)

I feel your pain. But sadly, not all bartenders are seasoned and educated professionals. Some of them are early-twenties schlubs getting by on looks and credit cards, slinging gin tonics and whiskey sours to tourists and college kids to pay the rent on their third of a shitty apartment while figuring out how this "real life" thing is supposed to work. Sad, but it's not like they're making $100k+ a year.
Why let your enjoyment of a $12-15 drink depend on a schlub's understanding of the word "neat"? Just say, "Whiskey, neat, no ice" if you're in one of those places where you can't trust them to know how to make your drink.
Those alimony checks are already in the mail.
Anyway, Maker's is the go-to for me because it's got that woodchippy taste to it, and I guess I've been a little out of the game lately but I haven't noticed an over-ordering of it at the bar. It wouldn't really strike me as a "banker's whiskey" either...
But ya - bartenders who don't know what a back is or only know how to make drinks named after sex acts are usually only at the places I don't want to be at. Then again I'm not an intern anymore either.
Maker's was always my dad's favorite bourbon, and if I didn't have a bottle at my apartment he would make a special trip to the liquor store to stock up for the weekend. Best part about that was he would come nowhere near finishing, so essentially I was funded with a bottle of Maker's every time he visited... I've never bothered ordering anything else.

I drink a lot of whiskey/bourbon/scotch, and I'd never order a Maker's (unless it's the only option, like at the wedding I was just at). It's fine, but there are so many better options...
Trivia note for all you young'uns...no bourbon is actually made in Bourbon County.
I can't wait for Stranahan to make it's way to the East Coast. Stranahan's fantastic stuff. Plus, their bourbon barrels are great for aging beer in. If you haven't had it (since it sounds like your out in Denver), the Breckenridge Well Built ESB? It's Breck's ESB that's been aged in Stranahan Barrels. It's fantastic!
I had the Well Built at the bar at the Stranahan's facility last week. Great stuff...

I like Maker's, but I'll second the Wild Turkey comment (butter knife fights notwithstanding). I enjoy me some Wild Turkey.
I prefer Woodford, but Knobb and Bulleit are both also great. Love Maker's too....most premium bourbons are fine with me.
Bulleit seems to be go-to on the west coast, FYI.
