Making jump to IB
Hey all,
I read up on here a lot and value all of your opinions. Please have a read on my story and help me make the best career decision both short and long-term:
I graduated in May from a non-target top 50 school as a finance major. Accepted into the school's honorary society (think skull and bones, blue key etc.), solid gpa, and internship experience in NYC at a myriad of firms (boutique IB, re law firm, and Citi Smith Barney private wealth).
I put in a decent amount of prep for recruiting season but we only had Wells and Raymond recruiting at our school. Got both 1st rds but no super day. Definitely could have been more prepared for a few behavioral questions.
Anyways, I was accepted to a commercial real estate investment firm's rotational program and started over the summer (not in the northeast). I've been here 5 months now. I am currently in investment mngmt but after my 1 year rotation it starts to get more into the legal/ loan workout side of things. I really dont want to pigeon hole myself and get stuck on the lending side or even commercial real estate long-term.
Long story short, a buddy of mine is a 1yr analyst at a MM firm in nyc. He just told me they under-hired for his class and are looking to make lateral hires in the spring. I was very intrigued when he brought up this opportunity.
Now, keep in mind i would be switching jobs about 9 months into the rotational program.
How marketable am I to a MM firm looking for lateral hires? I have underwriting experience (for commercial real estate), internship experience at a boutique IB, but also experiences in private wealth and law - which probably are worthless.
Should I be going full throttle towards this opportunity? Its not definite that they would even give me an interview. They also most likely would NOT be hiring for their real estate or lodging group so I'm not sure how valuable my experience would be.
Just trying to decide if I should be going head on towards making a complete jump to a MM IB firm with less than 1 year experience. I obviously would buy the interview guides on here and build up my story about loving NY, finance, and how i had to take the opportunity that I was given.
Thanks for any help!
Did you just equate your top 50 school's honorary society with Skull and Bones?
Obviously it is not on the level of skull and bones. It is of the same nature - leadership honorary society - top leaders, politicians, business men etc. recognizable alumni and organization.
Can't offer any real advice?
you went to UF? Go gators! sounds like you didn't network enough but your resume looks on par for a boutique IB position because of the IB internship. I'm still in school but I recommend going "full throttle" for that position as well as try to network via alumnis in NYC for other boutique IB firms
