Meaning of "equity value"
In valuation of a public company, are there occasions when a quoted equity value figure only reflects the value of free-float stock instead of total outstanding shares. Is there anything like that? Is it ever done where after a valuation (say DCF for instance), someone says "(intrinsic) equity value of this company is X billion" and he is only referring to value of free-float alone?
Equity value = market cap in pubcos.
Sure you could value the float alone but why? Maybe on an S&T desk it might be useful (I have no clue why), but certainly not useful on an m&a desk.
Relevant in the context of public companies that have insiders with a controlling interest. Also how SEC filing requirement thresholds are calculated. But not used in terms of an enterprise value / equity valuation
This doesn't come up typically.
