Mentioning that I am Talking to Other Groups
I have a networking call with someone in a group i am not really that interested in (I got referred to speak to them and didn't want to say no). I have already talked to someone in a different group that I am interested in and would like to speak to another sector as well, just not the one I am speaking with next week. Does anyone have advice on how to go about this, how I can best position asking him to connect me with a different team, and should I mention that I am talking to other groups on the floor?
When navigating this situation, it's important to strike the right balance between showing interest in the person you're speaking with and tactfully steering the conversation toward your goals. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s how you can approach it:
Show Genuine Interest in Their Group: Even if you're not particularly interested in their group, make sure to ask thoughtful questions about their work, team culture, and experiences. This demonstrates respect for their time and builds rapport.
Position Your Ask Strategically: Toward the end of the conversation, you can say something like:
"I’ve really enjoyed learning about your group and your experiences. I’m also exploring other areas within [firm name] to get a broader perspective. Would you be open to connecting me with someone in [specific group/sector] to learn more about their work as well?"
This frames your request as part of a broader learning process rather than a lack of interest in their group.
Mentioning Other Groups: It’s generally fine to mention that you’ve spoken to others, but do so tactfully. For example:
"I’ve had the chance to speak with Name from group recently, and it’s been great to get different perspectives across the firm. I’d love to continue broadening my understanding by connecting with someone in [desired group]."
This shows that you’re proactive and thorough in your networking efforts without diminishing the value of your current conversation.
Ask for Referrals Thoughtfully: Always ask for referrals in a way that doesn’t make the person feel like a stepping stone. Express gratitude for their time and insights before making your request.
Remember, networking is as much about building relationships as it is about gathering information. Even if this group isn’t your top choice, maintaining a positive connection could benefit you in unexpected ways down the line.
