MF PE vs Top EB RX

Hi everyone,

Recruiting is picking up and I am hoping to receive some advice from more senior people. I am at sophomore at W with very good stats and I think I have a very solid chance at doing well at recruiting.

Only thing is that I am not really sure what`I should be aiming for. I am not flexing my offers since I have none but I hope to receive some advice from people who have more experience. My interests are in pretty wide excluding growth/tech

These are my considerations and how I would rank future offers.

tier 1 - BX PE: I would take this offer above everything else, seems the perfect step for a career in investing and I would be happy to skip banking

tier 2 - realistically, it is very very hard to get BX PE, and I believe I have a much higher change to get something a little bit worse. In this tier I would put other MF PE (KKR, Ares, Bain Cap don't have a strong interest in tech so I probably will do bad at SL/Vista) and Top EB RX (I think I would only consider PJT/HL/EVR since I do not want to do a generalist program). Honesty among these two buckets I am having a really hard time to decide what is best to focus on. I do enjoy rx, and given stellar exits from these groups I am inclined to pick them as I can always leave rx but I cannot do it after choosing PE. On the other side, starting in PE would accelerate my career in investing and save me time spent in banking. I don't really wanna do growth so I am not worried about EB RX exits, and additionally, these opportunities would give me more time to decide/understand what type of investing I would like to go in. I used to think that MF PE programs would be more appealing than EB RX but I am seeing more and more great upperclassmen go for EB RX (both at W and at GPS) so I am not sure if I am missing something.

tier 3: If I can't get tier 1 and 2, I think my best bet is other EB for RX and M&A. Barring BB for the usual reasons, I am not that passionate for investing to pick a MM PE over a EB so this is what I am thinking but again more than happy to hear others' opinions.

I very well realise who hard it is to get some of these offers, but me or someone else will get them so I hope this post can be useful!

If you haven’t started RX prep already or taken the course, you’re likely too late. For the record, I know a few people who have turned down MF PE in groups they don’t want (not BCP), even at BX, for RSSG. I’d say BCP - RSSG - MF PE - EB RX - EB - BB.

I strongly disagree. For starters BX PE doesn't have groups, it is a generalist program and I have not heard of anyone turning it down for RSSG. In fact, last year PJT RSSG had to recruit late since one of the people they signed turned them down for PEMF program. The brand of PJT RSSG is worse than top MFPE shops inside and outside of the finance world. The compensation is also very similar. Look PJT RSSG and RX as a hole is really hyped on this forum so I would really consider if that is what you really want to do. If I could re-recruit again, I would say the top group is GS TMT but that is specifically for me. You have to figure out what you actually want to do before committing to something just because you saw upperclassman do it.

You're a sophomore.  You're not picking the job you're going to have for the rest of your career.  Cast a wide net and go for everything you're interested in and see what lands.  You don't even have any options yet.  Get the offers first and then you can decide between them.  Worrying about this right now is a waste of time.

Given how hard these offers are to get, I think that focusing on one of the two buckets could be really beneficial

BX is arguably the strongest PE/alts brand out there and gives you optionality since everyone within finance knows the name. Obviously any MF PE program will be excellent, this type of post is really just splitting hairs over "prestige". Even with Marshall Wace being one of the biggest HFs, they still have less brand recognition outside of the HF/PE space.

BX PE by a long shot if you're the lucky one (yes, sometimes they only hire one intern) to get a SA or off-cycle internship. PJT is top-notch in RX together wit HL, but be aware that competition is not at fierce as in the US and most people would take a BB over PJT unless they're dead set on doing RX

So what was the outcome? Did you manage to get either offer?
