EuroMonkeySome bosses will tell you to stay, seen similar situations where it happened. Of course, depends on boss, deal and how involved you are.

If you're unlucky, do a reality check and tell them to piss off.

Wow I could not imagine that. WIll you get fired if you still go? B/c I think that if I am on a deal / or if I am not on a deal, I am still going to that wedding.

just tell them well in advance and dont miss it.

its really not worth missing something like that to for this crap.

yuo gotta figure, people only get married a couple times in their life you know

Reality check is needed indeed. If a boss EVER told me I couldn't make a sibling's wedding for work I would quit on the spot. This is absolutely ridiculous.

I can't wait for the post regarding one's own wedding.

"Boss, I have to miss work to get married."

"No, you are an important analyst on a live deal, you cannot get married."

This is getting ridiculous.

I completely agree, a line has to be drawn somewhere. If my boss gave me any shit about it, I'd say "fuck off, family first".

I wouldn't mind quitting, I wouldn't want to work at a chicken shit operation like that anyways.

Shit that's hilarious... I have to miss work to get married.., what if that makes or breaks a 20 million dollar bonus would u reconsider?

I feel like I've seen this question in interview guides. For more distant relative commitment to work is more important, but for sibling I'd agree family first.

(I doubt this question actually comes up in interviews, but I'm not sure how I'd answer.)

I had a buddy in PE who got married a few years back. We were out of town on his actual wedding weekend. He was getting married on Sunday. Friday night we were doing a guy's night out (bachelor party had been a month earlier), and he had to skip it because work called. He ended up in his hotel room on his laptop from about 6pm-9pm less than 2 days before his wedding. F that.

yeah its important to keep things in perspective. set your boundaries and let your seniors know that you won't flex when it comes to family matters.

I agree. In my experience noone will ever tell you outright "no, you can't go" as long as it is relatively reasonable. Even a friend's wedding that you are not the best man, groomsman, etc. will probably be ok if you handle it the right way.

People always pull that passive aggressive shit when you are trying to take off - acting like they are the good cop when they are passively making you feel guilty about it. The key is to ask yourself if it's worth it to miss work, and push back hard and don't look back. If you're wishy washy, you invite people to pressure you more into staying, and if you end up deciding to go, you make people mad because the expectation was there.

weddings are planned months in advance. if you then tell your boss months in advance about this wedding i am sure they will have no problem making arrangements for you.

It is true that these things sometimes happen; I've witnessed a guy yield to bank pressure. Big mistake.

Which brings me back to the reality check thing. It's easy to lose perspective in this business given the potential impact of the ideas we sell and the fact that we spend all our time in the bank with other blood thirsty bankers. It's this lack of perspective that makes the numerous sad bastards and arrogant cocks around (those who start as bastards en up worse).

Advice to those about to start, make sure you keep in touch with old friends who have nothing to do with the business (harder if you come from a top school), and keep some kind of hobby as much as you can.
