Morning start time

Wednesday is my first day as an analyst in an IBD group.

I haven't been told what time to show up (just to show up at reception Wednesday morning).

What time should I show up? (What time do most analysts show up in ibd?)

Get there at 8:15. It's your first day, there will be HR shit to do.

Afterwards, get a feel from the group. Try and show up by 845 for the first week at least until you get a feel for what people do normally.

8:15 is ridiculously early for banking, NO ONE will be there except a few MDs.

On your first day I would get in at 9:00am and then after that see when the other analysts usually come in.

My group its between 9:30 - 10 depending on how late you were there the previous night.

On your first day, you should probably show up no later than 8:30am. While many bankers don't show up til 9:00am or later, you will likely be greeted by H.R. and start your day with paperwork. If you show up at 9:00am, you're going to make a very bad first impression. Everyone always shows up early and sits around for 15-20 minutes on the first day, it's expected.

nightflarer, I don't know any company in any industry with standard working hours of 8:00am-4:00pm in the U.S. 8:00am-5:00pm or 5:30pm is more realistic. Also, from what I've seen, West Coast companies frequently start the day earlier if they frequently work with East Coast clients / offices.

I agree with most of the previous posters - show up at around 8:30-8:45 - unless of course you know the group starts earlier (I know of groups that get in as early as 7:45 and then as late as around 9:30 on average). So unless you know otherwise, a safe time to get started would be around 8:30. Expect a bunch of paperwork, computer issues, and work to get acquainted with the system and such. Get to know the team more, what's going on in terms of deals and work flow, etc - use the first day to tackle all of the odds and ends (especially computer and phone issues) and take your time with it. Good luck.

nonskaterhaterI was supposed to show up at 9:00, and I showed up at 8:59 on the first day. It wasn't an issue for me..lol. I think people just tend to worry too much about these sorts of things...no one cares that much...

Surely they would have been impressed that you were still early though?

jackofalltradesThere is nothing wrong with showing up early -- even really early on your first day.

There are many things wrong with showing up late.

Not sure why there is a discussion on this.

Jackofalltrades shut this thread down.

First day of work, show up early.

I've heard that In NYC, IBs are usually in at sometime between 8:00 to 8:30 AM (since usually they have soo much to do and the fact, they want to be in their office before their VP). 9:00 AM is the latest

every analyst I spoke to said that the official starting time is around 9 am, but most of them don't get in to the office until 9:30, and on the late night days they don't get in until 10 or so...altho one guy told me he doesn't show up until 11:30 on late night days

Is this IBD? What group and type of bank?

Yes BB IBD. This happens when you're a 2nd year with an offer

Incredible you got an offer with such poor reading comprehension

He asked "is this IBD", I answered yes. I selectively chose to not reveal group. Not about reading comprehension.

The question was what time do you get off the elevator in the morning.

If you actually read the whole thread, you'd realize that someone asked me a followup question on when I get out.

I hate my group. Lateraling ASAP.

If you are trying to lateral because of the hours, then I'll just frankly say it could be a lot worse.

MD, PE East Coast 7:30-8 if I'm heading into the office (not traveling or don't have a breakfast meeting but if I'm in town I try to do breakfast meetings at 7 or earlier to get those done before the day starts)

I'm surprised how late people go in. I feel like 8 is slacking. But I always feel bad for the West Coast capital markets/trader types. When I lived in SF I had a few friends who were in the office at ridiculous hours in the morning. Of course they were done by 3 pm.
