Msc Finance + CFA to get into IB ???

Hey guys, first time posting here.

I’m getting my bachelors on Civil Eng. at the top university of a small country (Pucp - Peru). I’ve just got into a Equity Research club at my school and I’ve never been so passionate about a topic in my life. I love finance my dudes, engineering is has a cool technical side but I wouldn’t handle the lifestyle and salary they get (for the amount of work they put out). So, I’m thinking about getting my Msc. at the University of Melbourne in Australia (in 2020-2021) and getting my CFA in the next 4 year period (in case I screw up one of the exams).

Will the Msc. and Candidate Level 2-3 get me into IB (boutique or BB)? Should I move overseas or stay in Australia after my studies??

Thanks, I’ll wait for your response

ib is a lot of work too, most likely more than engineering someone else will have to comment on the ib scene in australia, but i would target ib firms that specialize in natural resources or any industry your engineering background will help you in

I have no idea how Australia work but CFA sounds like a total overkill for investment banking. Why the hell wait for 4 extra years to start that career, learning mostly irrelevant stuff.

As an engineer, you're sharp quantitatively or should be. Start self-studying finance as a mofo, maybe through WSO courses or other. Live finance, breathe finance.. take finance classes if you can take non-engineering classes.. mainly, NETWORK with alumni, current finance students at your school...

Master of Finance degree should definitely open doors - it will teach you and connect you with a bunch of people (new alumni network). If you don't get an IB job after that, start working in something as relevant/similar as you can and then try to move into banking. Don't "waste" 3-4 years on a CFA

Just my .02

great points! though i disagree about the cfa, this dude needs it as it gives him the opportunity to show people he is committed to finance and making the switch from engineering

also attaining a designation takes effort and dedication, similar to ib which looks good to employers

Most of the interns take the CFA 1 just to show the market that they got the basics. But if you are grad, you should focus in Msc network and serious ib courses.
