Networking with Non-Alums

This summer, I've networked a lot with alums in IBD from my school and most have been pretty responsive. However, I go to a smaller school that doesn't have too many finance alums, so I'm running out quickly. Basically, I'm wondering how to cold network with people that I really don't have a connection with. I've tried via LinkedIn and email, but I've been much less successful reaching out to non-alums. Is there a way to better connect with people that I don't have much in common with?

I use email. Craft a succinct message that briefly highlights your experience and your desire to learn more about their experience in the industry. I've found more success in getting replies when I don't mention wanting a job/internship. I usually follow up after a week. If they haven't replied after three emails I move on to someone else. Most of my networking is done with individuals who aren't alums from my university.
