Odd Lateral Move

I'm currently in the beginning of my 3rd analyst year at Real Estate PE firm (specializes in sourcing deals and taking a minority equity stake but needs to find larger LPs) based on the West Coast. I've been trying to get back to NYC, where I'm originally from, while staying on the buy-side, but I'm finding it hard to get in front of people at larger PE funds.

Recently someone at a bulge bracket bank (family friend, pretty high up) suggested I try coming into their Analyst program and repeating my 2nd year, and has offered to help get me in front of the right people to do this.

Holding off on the merits (or lack thereof) of discounting a year for a minute, does anyone think this is advisable? Would I be doing myself a disservice by starting in the 2nd year rather than as a 1st year, or am I really just better off trying for a PE firm and waiting for a more apples to apples opportunity?
