Overcoming Non Target Background

Can anyone who has overcome a non target background or know someone who has add some color into what they did? Any groups you recommend joining or certificates you recommend receiving? What firms/types of firms are good to get your foot in the door?

small liberal arts school during undergrad - working at a financial services data provided for the past 4 years. my gmat is at 680 if that helps frame the type of b-school I might be able to get into.

To break into IB, S&T, AM, MC or F500:

  1. Network, Network, Network
  2. Study technicals, Build business acumen and Remain up-to-date with the news. Extra points if you can discuss it casually and articulately within context.
  3. Participate in external case studies

Good luck. Break into a top company.

Then gain a few years’ experience, hit it high with GMAT/GRE and get into an MBA business schools">M7 MBA program?

Be social (aka network but reach out and make meaningful connections - not just a ton of crappy ones), show your passion for finance (join an investment club, invest for yourself, get certifications, do research, TA, etc.), and like others said, be ready for the interview (have your story down, know your accounting and modeling and whatnot, etc.).

I came from a non-target student-athlete background and made it into a MM coverage group and accepted the return offer. Non-target is not the end of the world like people make it out to be.

Believe me it's all netwoking. I interned at a Top EB (PJT, EVR, Greenhill) this summer and am returning FT. Believe me. A 3.7+ GPA, 1-2 finance internships and solid networking is all you need.

Curious how you networked with those EB's. Was it a lot of cold emailing or did you have an alum who you connected well with and he/she really pulled for you?
