Please Help me out here!!!

I'm a rising at a T50 Non-target school. I'm having a really hard time networking. I have some work experience in banking and PE but nothing to brag about and have been trying to network since my freshman year. I know I'm doing something wrong but don't know what. I was wondering if it is okay to cold email or message on LinkedIn to Ibankers who are not alumni. If you were to get a cold email or message from a student, would you respond to it? How would you like the message to be? I'm really struggling right now and because the recruiting cycle has already started and in some places, even ended. Please help me out here. I'd appreciate any tips you guys have.

No harm in cold-emailing people who aren't alums. I personally wouldn't DM on LinkedIn; you might be better off finding e-mail formats of their firms via Rocketreach.com or something. The e-mail needs to be brief, something you can read on your phone without scrolling. Be polite, concise, attach your resume, and sound genuine. I'm not too sure with recruiting timelines, but figure out which firms are recruiting in the Fall or in July. Those, you can still make your way in if you hustle hard enough.

TBH, having a strong GPA along with that kind of experience should be enough to get you some calls. Best of luck with recruiting!

No worries, happy to help. Another big tip: focus on being implicit about your qualifications, but explicit about wanting to learn. Your resume will let them decide whether or not you're worth talking to. In the e-mail, emphasize wanting to learn and raise intelligent questions to bridge gaps in your knowledge. And if you get the call, do the diligence needed to have an intelligent conversation, but if you can't find stuff, don't be afraid to ask if the person's warm. Again, best of luck.

I emailed about 300 people, only 10% were alumni. My alumni response rate was around 70%, whereas my random response rate was around 10%. These numbers are after follow-ups. Honestly other than 1 person who was an alumni and has really helped me out, the non-alumni have been way better conversations. If they don't respond always send a followup a week or two later. And once you're done with the conversation make sure to ask them to forward you to other people at the firm.
