Most people who do Barry's tend to have a gym membership as well, and just supplement it with Barry's a couple times per week. It's really difficult to have a specific, tailored workout program when you're only going to those classes every day, whereas in a gym like Equinox you can obviously focus on whatever areas you want.

In NYC, most people go straight to Equinox and some do Barry's on the side. In SF/LA, people tend to do both actually, but usually booking Barry's for cheaper by just getting one-class passes or reserving through ClassPass.

In my opinion, the best move is to get a membership at a cheaper gym (the equipment will always be the exact same, you just won't be able to flex on people with an Equinox shirt) and use those savings to book Barry's classes to supplement your workouts with that important HIIT/cardio work which is difficult to accomplish by yourself at the gym.

You don’t need Barry’s if you have the discipline/ know how to work out on your own. $35 to have some 5’9” squirrel yell at me to run on a treadmill and do a few renegade rows? No thanks

Neither. Both are prime examples of life style creep, especially when diet is typically considered more important in comparison to physical activity. Gun to head? Barry’s.

Personally, I think both are cults.

As such, I wouldn't have a membership with either (i'll do Barry's here and there but more with some friends as a social thing; plus some data rooms pay for it these days). You can get a pretty solid gym membership that allows you to accomplish everything that both of those give you (and maybe more), along with saving the extra money. My advice would be to find a lower price gym membership and then hit Barry's here and there for fun. Do you only do class / group workouts? Because you can lift weights and go for runs to achieve the same or better results than Barry's. Also, you only plan to work out 8 times per month? I'd rather have the ability to work out more if I choose to do so.

Equinox definitely gives you more flexibility and if you’ve worked out before and aren’t as in to classes as Barry’s; it’s definitely the better option in my opinion. Equinox is definitely a motivating place to work out as everyone is fit and the price makes you feel guilty for not getting into the gym. The locker rooms are also almost spa like (eucalyptus towels, Kiehls products, etc.) that are nice after a long day. Personally, I miss it and hope to be back soon assuming cases continue to go down.

I dont live a lifestyle that a lot of ppl might live at my compensation. Equinox is one of the few luxuries I let myself have for a few reasons:

- I actually like going. Its a much cleaner / nicer atmosphere than something like NY Sports Club. Makes me want to go more often

- Multiple locations / showers. Nice having one by my apt and by work that I could take a shower in (unlike NY Sports Club). Have gone to other locations too

- Indoor basketball court

I am not big on classes so can't compare to Barry's
