Q&A: Non-Target -> Multiple EB/BB Offers
This forum was the sole reason I was able to break in and get multiple offers for 2022 SA. Happy to answer any questions relating recruiting, networking or anything in general.
Background: Semi-Target in West Coast but non-target for NYC. Non-diversity. 3.4 GPA. 2 internships in IB (MM and boutique). Unique startup experience. Networked with 150+ across the street in LA and NYC.
Offers: 2 BB's and 1 EB
Once you get past the initial screening (CV/Psychometric) is there any difference between a non-target and a target candidate ?
assuming this is from a UK poster given the CV/psychometric comment. If so then its important to note that American's don't use psychometrics and largely recruit on referral/OCR/resume pushes all done via networking. Not the same in the UK; psychometrics are a very loose screen and only really filter out the lowest tier. Most probably get caught out at CV where if you're a non-target in the UK you won't get past. Beyond that its up to interview performance and ACs.
Not from the UK, but I think that there will always be a difference between non-target and target students at any stage of the interview. That doesn't mean that you can't land an offer as a non-target but it means that you have to be slightly more impressive whereas the target kids get the benefit of the doubt, non-target kids don't.
It actually might be even more important, targets are more essential for UK recruiting

Any tips for landing IB internships for sophomore year as non-diversity?
Network network network - Sophomore year internships at a boutique bank or LMM/MM can help you tremendously when recruiting. I got into both my processes through networking rather than just applying online.
How much can you bench?
Id venture to say 0-5% of IB analysts can bench 2 plates, and probably around 10-15% can bench 1 plate. Granted, OP is in college so actually has time to work out, but IB analysts aren’t exactly what i would call “physically imposing” from my experience
Does 2 plates mean 2 45s on each end? So 180+45 bar = 225 total?
0-5% including male + female analysts or just the male analysts. No way its that low if its just the male

Hey, first off congrats! Thanks for doing this. For BB recruiting how much does networking matter vs resume/experience?
I think for both EB and BB's, resume matters more. That being said, I think that with the BB's moving towards a more HR focused recruiting style while EB's are still very networking friendly, networking at EB's carries more weight.
I connected with a IB VP at a EB for an experience analyst role. I wasn't invited to interview for the role I reach out to him about but I asked him to keep me in mind for internal and opportunities which arose from his network. He was happy to oblige but asked me to resend my resume (I checked and there aren't an typos/formatting errors or things like that). Should I just resend as I'm over thinking it?

Where did you start networking and what was the most beneficial? Asking as someone w literally zero alumn in banking and my only network is a handful of people who genuinely cared after cold emailing
I started with alumni and worked my way to non-alumni. My goal was to get one contact at a firm or group and ask for referrals to other people. This was the way I got in contact with so many people. Sometimes that was an alumni or sometimes it was just a cold email to someone. Need to get that first point of contact and its much easier to network around a firm/group.

First of all, congrats! I am curious about when and where did you start looking for that sophomore internship? I know there are a lot of opportunities out there like PWM, MM IB, and regional boutiques. I imagine they have pretty different application timelines (some are probably off-cycle). Did you network with all the alumni in the finance industry until someone has a spot for you? Or, did you follow certain positions at smaller firms and network accordingly before the application opens up? Thanks!
I started looking during my sophomore year fall and started interviewing during my winter break.
Not sure about other timelines as I didn't really look into PWM but I would imagine its similar? I mainly networked with smaller firms and asked about internships etc.

I'm an incoming full-time analyst, so what's your parent's income bracket? You didn't answer. Obviously must be a lot if you don't even want to answer the question but will reply to others.
This thread is such a clown show. This extremely rich and privileged kid who grew up on the "West Coast", aka probably California, is telling non-targets to network to get interviews lol. This really shows how far out of touch you gotta be with normal people if your only advice is just "network". This guy probably went to a private high school and had parents that pull in multiples of what your average non-target's parents make. He won't even give an honest ballpark of his parent's income because he is too ashamed to admit it. The only difference between this person and the kid's from Exeter is the "non-target" label. I guess he also forgot to leave out the part about posting as a junior in October 2020, which means he's delaying graduation to game the system for SA2022. He recruited for IB as a junior, got an internship at an LMM/MM and recruited again as a junior to get his EB internship offer. To all of the non-targets out there, don't be fooled.
