Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key takeaways and insights for Summer Associate IB recruitment, particularly for FIG (Financial Institutions Group) and Generalist roles:

1. Profile Highlights for Success

  • Background: Your economics undergrad, CFA charterholder status, and tier-1 asset management experience within a BB (bulge bracket) are standout credentials. These align well with what top banks like JPM, MS, and BofA look for in candidates.
  • MBA Program: Being enrolled in an M7 MBA program is a significant advantage, as these schools are heavily targeted by top investment banks for summer associate roles.
  • Networking: Leveraging your prior experience and networking within the industry likely played a crucial role in securing multiple offers.

2. FIG vs. Generalist Roles

  • FIG Specialization: FIG is a niche but highly technical group, focusing on financial institutions like banks, insurance companies, and asset managers. Your prior experience in investment management likely made you a strong candidate for this group.
  • Generalist Roles: These provide broader exposure across industries, which can be beneficial if you're still exploring your long-term interests within IB.

3. Recruitment Process Insights

  • Networking: Informational interviews and coffee chats are critical. Speaking with employees in your target groups (e.g., FIG at JPM) helps you understand the culture and tailor your pitch.
  • Interviews: Expect a mix of technical and behavioral questions. For FIG, technicals may include valuation of financial institutions, regulatory impacts, and capital structure nuances.
  • Superday: Referencing specific conversations with employees during interviews can leave a strong impression, as noted in previous WSO threads.

4. Why JPM FIG NYC?

  • Reputation: JPM's FIG group is highly regarded for its deal flow and expertise in the financial sector.
  • Location: NYC is the hub for financial services, offering unparalleled exposure and networking opportunities.
  • Career Trajectory: FIG experience can lead to roles in private equity, corporate development, or senior positions within financial institutions.

5. Advice for Aspiring Candidates

  • Preparation: Use resources like the WSO IB Interview Prep Pack to master technicals and behavioral questions.
  • Networking: Start early and aim to connect with employees in your target groups. Build genuine relationships and seek advice.
  • Fit: Be clear on your story—why IB, why the specific bank, and why the group (e.g., FIG). Tailor your responses to align with the bank's culture and values.

Why did you decide to move from AM to BB? Was it a tough "sell?" Was there an emphasis on why IB and techs versus peers, and how did you view interview difficulty?

Wanted to move into a more technical function so decided to go via the biz school route.

Motivations are always sanity checked so needed to have that to be perfect.

Given I came from finance (albeit not IB), I had thought that the technicals would be slightly easier given for most of my cohort, it was manageable. That didn’t end up being the case, my interviews were weirdly amongst the most technical with low margin of making errors - given BB background, their expectations ran higher. Think it was also a function of the group being FIG - they are known to be very technical.
