Questions for analysts – workload / responsibilities

Got some questions for you analyst in your first year and up… for those of you currently working in banking, how much exposure do you get in terms of responsibilities?

I’m a first year in a BB and though it gets busy here and there, it seems that most of the stuff I’m doing is pretty much qualitative. Most of the time would be analyzing trading activities, putting profiles together and the most technical stuff I’ve had exposure to is just doing comps and precedents… nothing too much in terms of DCF and other modeling – this seems to be taken care of by the associate which pretty much runs things.

In terms of putting books together too, it seems that associates/VPs run the book in terms of the structure, and content, etc. I’m not sure whether I should be feeling this way and just want to see what everybody else is getting exposure to, and whether I’m missing out on some experience/opps I might be getting if I was elsewhere.

Interested in hearing those that currently work in banking with insights.

bonusbombNo - recently just heard that an analyst recently got her hands to touch on a model after 1.5 years and for an anlayst that's been working here for the 10 months or so is getting similar experience as I am - just seeing whether this is the norm

After 1.5 years is just fucking stupid.

I'd say the 1st years in my group have been taking on more technical assignments since maybe February -- the really modeling intensive stuff is still more reserved for 2nd years and 3rd years though

Not uncommon.

Right about now, you'll start getting put on some modeling assignments. It's typical for a group to let first-years get acclimated before allowing them to do some heavy lifting.

Varies widely to be honest. A friend of mine did nothing but profiles / comps / case studies / etc.... for his first YEAR. He finally did some more interesting stuff after that 1 year mark. My experience has been better...built my first deal model within my first 2 months. I also get a lot of direct interaction with MDs and Ds...he does not.
