Reputation of city national bank and should I take the role
Is it worth taking a capital markets role at a small bank? Are my opportunities severely limited? would my offer within consulting be better?
This is for junior summer
I got an offer within the capital markets division of city national bank which is a subsidiary of RBC. It has an AUM of about 100 billion and has reasonable presence in California especially LA. It deals primarily with credit and is very big within entertainment banking. The role includes experience in Sales&Trading, loan syndication, and International banking/trade finance
I was curious if there are opportunities from a small bank like this and if it looks bad on the resume. What kinda opportunities can I expect down the line. How does this impact my future chances at different places. This is my junior summer internship and would I be able to recruit for IB/capital markets at a bigger bank.
I also have an offer within Consulting in Healthcare Financial consulting at Mercer. Mercer is a bigger name and seems more stable. The internship is also better. I also have a finance bend to the offer. Mercer also is big in the alternatives/investments space. Also being part of Marsh McLennan a lot of people move over to Oliver Wyman nera economic consulting. Also probably a better resume name. Also have an offer at a more niche healthcare consulting firm
I’m personally more interested in the more hardcore finance space within IB/credit/global markets. That said I wonder if taking a smaller bank with smaller would be a mistake. Have also heard that city national has been tumultuous of late
Any input would be heavily appreciated

Depends on what you want to do postgrad. Both about the same in terms of experience and prestige. CNB job sounds more fun to me than the Mercer role.
I’m more interested in hardcore finance basically high finance eventually. So I guess capital markets which has a DCM and sales and trading component is definitely more relevant. That said I’m scared that city national bank is too small a name for future opportunities. Idk if I can do high finance if I end up there. Mercer is a big name so at least it leaves doors open in general if not for high finance. It also is part of marsh McLennan with Oliver Wyman and whatnot
if I take capital markets at CNB would I ever have a shot at IB/Private credit/Asset management etc
I did an internship in one of the two so I may be able to provide some background info on what the job is like. Feel free to message.

People with at least a walnut in their brain will know who City National Bank is. I’d take this one over the one from Mercer.
Are you sure. I feel like 99.99% of people in finance haven’t heard of it. If they have idk if the internship has value if I want to get into IB or some other high finance role at a bigger name
You mean your fellow students who are looking to go into finance? They don’t know shit. Hell, even most full-time analysts don’t know all the players in their respective fields.
Choose City National Bank and don’t look back. You will also be doing yourself a favor by making your resume look like you have your minds set in finance, not consulting.
