Resignation stories
Finally, seems like I will be resigning in the next few days. Been dreaming about this for some time.
Is a shame though, actually like the work, and could see myself doing this long-term if it just wasn't for the lack of inspirational seniors...
This made me think of funny resignation stories - please share!!!
What’s your next move?
MFPE
If you like the work but not the Seniors then swap bank. Going to PE doesn't solve that problem.
Nice - congrats!
My old group hated me, I hated them. I was recruiting heavily behind the scenes and got an offer that I accepted. I was honestly going to work my final weeks to be respectful, but one day the staffer was micromanaging and degrading me over teams, so I had enough.
I knew that the policy was to get walked out the day of your notice if you’re going to another bank, so I just told them to reassign the deal because I’m going on PTO effective tomorrow. Went on break for 1.5 weeks, put in my resignation the day I came back and walked out. Haven’t looked back.
How was the break? only 1.5 weeks??
Did u ever stay in touch with any of your old colleagues?
How is your life now?
Love the story. But if you are in NY, you played yourself slightly because (i) they would have had to pay out your accrued PTO when you left and (ii) when banks dismiss you for leaving to a competitor, they don’t change your employment exit date.
E.g., they would have just paid your salary for the two weeks of your notice period (but would have taken your phone and laptop on day you gave notice).
Nah they honored and paid me through my notice period, just revoked all access and didn’t let me work. Their policy was to also pay out unused PTO. I’ve done that with another job before and the final amount wasn’t really worth it after taxes, so I just enjoyed the time off instead.
Is this normal? People hating everyone. Like gossip is too much, if you ignore you become the target. Whats the way out of it? If you do your job, be amicable and polite and not indulge in too much fake laugh bursts when chatting on teams to prove social dominance— you are the odd one. Is this toxicity natural across?
had a colleague who just stopped showing up to work one day. was staffed on barely anything because they were mad about their bonus and whenever he got a work ask he would forward to this junior team with "pls handle". it took 2 months before the team realized he was missing (this was before remote work). it took another month for them to process the paperwork to lay him off. when they finally told him he was laid off, they got a package from thailand about 2 weeks later with his laptop.
Legend
There was a guy who went viral for quitting and destroying his MD’s or boss’ office. Want to say it was Texas
…think he got sued for the damage. Wasn’t an IB team from what I recall
That guy was an ER analyst in NYC he spilled champagne on his bosses desk. He even got his CFA revoked after that.
Thanks
Joined a MLM accidentally years ago while undergoing a career transition. Stayed for a week, realized it was a scam and didn't go to work on Monday. Slept in and didn't notify my 'manager.' Woke up to like 10 missed calls. I just texted "yeah, not interested" and went back to sleep.
All these guys were dreaming of opening up their own offices and make 6 figures. I felt bad for some that drank the kool-aid including my manager.
I was really embarassed by this and only a few people know about my MLM incident. Used it as motivation to get into a top MBA and have a solid career trajectory to at least a low 6 figure income. Worked out for me.
Low 6 figures for a single guy seems to be the way sometimes. Work been crushing lately
CONGRATS BRO
I quit a place that I really hated on a personal level. It had a very bureaucratic culture where HR/Legal/Compliance were all on power trips all the time. I had bigger reasons for quitting, but a small reason was my frequent ugly run-ins with these hall monitor types.
So I tell my boss I'm going to a new job, and he schedules me for the typical HR meeting. HR asks me to sign a 2-page document saying I'm resigning voluntarily. I wondered why does it take so many words to say I'm resigning? I skimmed it for 3 seconds, it basically absolves them of any liability for illegal termination or whatever.
I asked what happens if I don't sign it and the stupid HR lady (who I already had past problems with . . she's that classic HR boss bitch who's been there forever and thinks she runs the place) tells me I won't get my last two weeks pay if I don't sign it. I said I want 60 days pay or I won't be signing any papers. She gleefully tells me "this isn't a negotiation." I got triggered by that, because she used those exact words on a buddy of mine a year earlier when he asked her for more severance while he was getting wrongfully canned. So I lost my shit and went off on her, telling her this isn't one of her stupid firing meetings where she gets to play bully, she's never added an ounce of value to the firm in her 20+ years and if she wants to make herself useful she can give me 60 days pay for my signature. Otherwise, no signature.
She tells me I'll probably have to leave immediately, but for now I should go back to my desk and I'll hear something soon. She then goes and CRIES AT HER DESK for like 20 minutes (witnesses told me) and calls my boss to tell him we can do the usual two weeks. I never signed her form. She still works there today. Some firms are just magnets for losers.
Love this for you. Sounds exactly like an old firm I worked at - full of total brown nosing losers with inflated perceptions of self importance.
Great story, but why 60 days? Seems a while.
I wanted it to hurt. I figured in the moment (snap decision, I wasn't expecting this convo at all) that 30 days is too close to 2 weeks. Wanted her to need to get special approval or something.
Lovely, you are a kind soul. I would have set a trap to get this type of personality to walk in and ending up giving me a 6+ months termination package. Otherwise they will be happy to see a legal letter. Many firms prefer to pay this up as $100-200k is not worth their corporate time and a liability provision sits on their balance sheet, so there is corporate policy in clearing this. They were trying to get the quick solution by asking you (or many other people with no insights of the background) to sign the 2 pagers
Not as epic as some stories shared above but my last two emails in banking were 1) transaction announcement to the whole firm and 2)farewell email, in this order.
Someone sent the spongebob "aight imma headout" meme as their goodbye e-mail en masse, and sent a separate goodbye email to people he actually liked. Made me lol
