Screwed up technical question with MD

Hi all - I'm working as an investment banking associate in M&A and recently went through rounds of interviews at another BB from senior associate - directors (5 ppl today) and did all fine. Had an interview with their junior MD yesterday. I did fine on the first part where we discussed in detail about my past deal but screwed up entirely on the technical question (accounting treatment question and didn't get exactly what he was asking for - went in the wrong direction). He then said he was short on time and didn't have the time to explain to me in futher detail but asked me who else I have spoken with in their team and who was the most difficult one. I said they vary in styles then that wraps up our interview. I followed up with an email thank you'ed him and provided a response to the question he asked. I have another interview with another director in the group. Will i still have any chance? Thank you so much guys, this is killing me.

It won't ding you, but I'm sure your response will be compared to the other candidates when deciding who to give the offer to. Many interviewers do a poor job trying to make an interview technical, and phrase their questions in a strange way, making it almost impossible to understand what they want and where they're coming from. Focus on doing well in the interview today, and if you came off as technically proficient with the other directors and likeable, you'll be ok.

I’m an undergrad and got a SA offer at a BB in NYC, so my situation isn’t completely comparable. But I also interviewed with an MD for my super day and messed up a good amount of technicals in the interview. However, I did extremely well in the behavioral part of this interview and really showed my technical/market knowledge with my other interviewers. So at least in my case, I was able to mess up the technical part of one interview but was ok because I did well on the behavioral part of that interview and also did well in my other interviews and got the job. I think you should be fine as long as you put your mistake behind you and keep doing well
