Should I communicate I’m unhappy with my bonus number?
Year end comp discussion is coming up with my line manager. If my bonus number is lower than I expected Is it ok to say so? They usually ask if it met my expectations? I have quantifiable reasons why I think I should get what I deserve.
I work in corporate banking btw, not IB. Just wondering general consensus here on this
Depends on what your goal is in communicating it and what your role is. If the goal is to change their mind if it is too low, then probably not since it is almost impossible to change bonus numbers at a large bank once communicated. If it is to give them a warning that you are unhappy, then I would do it. But you should be a top performer or someone they would actually feel pain from quitting.
They are not going to change your bonus number so remove that as an option
If you are a top performer (i.e. top bucket on paper, not just MD says so) at your firm - and not ultra-replaceable i.e. an analyst, you can communicate that you're frustrated and this was not what you were expecting. But that's about it.
Otherwise, low bonus number pretty much just means time to start looking
