Should I take this internship? - MM

A bit about me

Just received an offer for equity research internship (aug-dec) for the fall, I'll be working under an analyst and will initiate coverage on 2 companies.. will track 15 companies in the consumer goods, financial services / tech industry..

I am seeking full time IBD positions for fall 2012..

Do I need to take the ER internship? I could probably land a job in boutique IB or boutique VC for the fall, but the ER posiiton is MM andhave a live offer

Thoughts? Comments?

I really want IBD for Fall 2012, just hope that the screener doesn't say, so he did IB then did ER and now he wants to do IB again?

that's an impessive amount of good internships. No, I doubt yet another internship would give you any advantage- diminishing returns and all that.

How/where did you get so many good internship opportunities as an UG?

Best Response

Worked in Fall 2009 (S&T) , Fall 2010 (S&T) , Summer 2011 (IB) and Fall 2011 (ER)... First 2 were unpaid, 3rd one was minimum wage UG Fall 2009 - June 2012

Now, the only cons is that I'll have to take courses in the summer of 2012, not a big deal if I have a FT IBD offer.. Diminishing returns yes, but not having ER on my resume vs. having 2-3 more courses completed, IMO having a MM/BB ER on your resume is better all else being equal for IBD recruitment..

What's your guys thoughts, anyone analysts/asscoiates her in IBD

It's a wash-up. Again, the fourth internship isn't going to improve your profile. Personally I'd prefer finishing up before the summer rather than taking another internship. After all, are you even going to have space to list all these internships on your one-page resume once you have full-time experience?

mhossain495Interesting how you got two S&T internships. Curious as to how you get them. Coldcalling, networking, college job site?

It's not so hard to get unpaid internships my friend...just have to be willing to work for free!

^Exactly, I had done my CMT (Certified Market Technician) and they were some local job postings in my city ON THE CMT JOB BOARD I cold-called, and stood outside his door about 5-10x before him giving me a chance. All of his partners thought I was so weird for being so desperate lol.. I worked for free.. + the CME subsidizes his employees anyways (They are huge market makers).. so he got paid to take me hahaha

So I've been hearing diminishing market returns, a lot, but fall recruitment starts in 2 weeks, and FT Offer is all im looking for.. this is my end goal.. land FT offer and the rest I don't care about haha

Problem is, in the US, its almost always illegal to hire unpaid interns save for a few exceptions (getting college credit, government agency, and maybe more). So they have to agree to give you minimum wage.
