Sick of BB Tech. Need a Way Out.
Long time lurker. Any constructive advice will do!
STEM background with Master's (both from a state school). Career switcher. So I was getting the Master's, hoping to become a quant/strat and work in IBD. I never got an interview with IBD. But at the time I considered myself lucky to have an interview with Technology at at a BB. So I jumped on the offer. Now it has been over a year, I hate the type of work I am doing. My team is not supporting any business whatsoever. And I know I am being treated like a second class citizen in BB. Also it doesn't help knowing the strats/quants on the revenue side make twice what I make while having comparable skills. I have good networks within the firm and great mentors within Technology.
I am very disciplined and self-motivated. I know I need a way out. I took and passed CFA II while getting my Master's. But that fact was not something people cared when I networked for a FO role a couple of years ago.
Now I don't want to pursue a quant/strat role anymore. Mainly because I don't think I am truly passionate about programming. Years ago, sure. First thing after school/work was opening up the laptop and code some. Now it's just not that fun anymore. But I am still very interested in finance.
I am 29. I would want to avoid going to B-school if I could. Mainly because I want out NOW. I don't think I'd have much luck putting together a successful application this cycle (short tenure with current BB mainly). If I pull it off for class of 2020, I would still have too long in my current role.
I've talked to many friends at MBB about their work and I think that could be a good fit. But I want to get some suggestions before telling them my intentions. Suggestions on switching careers again?
Quants don't have MBAs. They have Ph.Ds, and generally don't follow that path strictly because they intend on becoming a quant, but because they absolutely love the subject they are mastering.
May I ask If you networked before trying to get into IBD? Because I was considering on getting my masters in comp sci at a target but have recently been reconsidering it. did you try to get an internship or full time? And what did the people you networked with say when they saw you had a quant background?
