Silicon Valley?
What are some of the i-banks in Silicon Valley and how are they ranked? Also, if I'm currently in school in socal does that mean I will be stuck in LA? In other words, how is location determined when applying for a SA? Can one choose the location they would like to work?
what school do you go to? i actually go to one of the better schools in LA and to my knowledge CS, MS, Merrill, BoA, and Citi tech groups have all been out in the past to recruit.. but of those, CS and MS are the strong players and Merrill is no longer an option.. hah.
Thomas Weisel is tech focused but haven't been doin too hot in the past couple years.
GS, MS and CS have traditionally been the best. DB is up and coming; they've done some good deals lately. Citi/JPM/UBS will get the occasional big deal but it's more sporadic. BoA had barely any presence, but them + Merrill may start to make headway if they ever can integrate. Overall I'd say there's a pretty steep divide between the top 2 or 3 and everyone else in terms of deals and exit opp's.
To all bankers/PE guys out in silicon valley (Originally Posted: 11/12/2007)
What's it like working out there? How is the lifestyle, how is making friends if you're not from the area? What's the social scene like? What happens to those who don't live in SF? Feel free to PM me.
Depends on your location. SF is great, but the Palo Alto & Menlo Park areas are rough (especially if you don't know people in the area. It's only a half hour commute, but to be honest you're working 90 hour weeks and you might have 2 or 3 chances a month to go out up there. Not to mention the public transportation (Caltrain) only runs until midnight. So unless you're not planning on drinking, you need to make friends in the area to crash with (although not fun if you've got to be back at the office the next morning.)
You'll work as many hours as you would in NY. Good thing is that there are a higher percentage of people in the area making top range bonuses because they realize they need to pay people to deal with the area (PA & Menlo).
