Summer Analyst at Standard Chartered in London HELP!
So after a lot of networking I finally got a reply from the MD at Standard Chartered IBD in London. I got talking to him about a potential internship and we exchanged a few emails back and forth... Fast forward to today and I get a mail from his secretary saying that I have the internship. I did the two rounds of interviews, math test, etc etc...
However, what worries me most is that HR asked me who my sponsor was going to be. I haven't been asked this in any of my previous internships. I am afraid this might mean that the internship in unpaid (I did not discuss pay during my interviews).
I haven't received the full offer yet so I could be freaking out over nothing, but as much as I want this internship, I don't think I can afford to live in London and work the crazy hours without any compensation. Any thoughts?
I think it is illegal for an internship to be unpaid in Europe... Maybe if it was some kind of voluntary/academic work, but internship?
Anyway, it would be lame if they can't at least cover some minimum.
Pick up the phone, call the HR people, ask them what they mean by sponsor, ask them whether the role is paid or unpaid. You can be guaranteed that the amount of fretting and thinking you will go through about this call far, far exceeds the amount they will care about it.
