Superday was on Friday, now it's on phone...

So a close friend of mine was scheduled to fly to New York for a superday; however, he is coming from eastern Canada and it is a bit expensive (think Tor,Ott,Mont, Quebec City). After talking on the phone, the bank (MS/JPM/GS) said that his package was too expensive (1 night hotel + Air Canada tickets - comes up to $2000) and they scheduled him for an interview on the phone instead of in NYC.

He asked them if he was at a disadvantage if his interview was on the phone, to which they replied no the team understands.. My friend thinks this is bull$hit, what could he do at this point? The phone interview is only 30 minutes, and he finds it hard to believe that they can make offers based on this.. The group is one of the three --> IBD/GCM/AM

In some ways, it's an advantage (if you're the type to get nervous, and also in that you can have your notes in front of you or be in a more comfortable spot than in a suit). But you'll be at a disadvantage in terms of being able to develop in-person rapport (unless you're a real charismatic SOB and can ooze charm over the phone). Really depends on you.

As per Whiskey's comments, you could ask to contribute to some of the costs. Otherwise, you don't have a choice in the matter.

I don't know what world you live in but from any of those places to nyc you can go for less than 500$... have you checked porter (fly with them regularly)? they have last minute flights for like 250 (taxes in) from toronto to newark and you can just taxi or w.e form of transportation you choose into manhattan... also take megabus if your really on a budget you can go to nyc and back for less than 100 bucks (been there done that) so i really suggest you research prices

Kanon -- to be honest, I'm surprised they even offered this as an option.

I had a conflict when I was invited to SF for an interview, HR straight up said they would like to compare candidates back to back and in person rather than video or phone call.

But to counter what you said, yes you can have notes in front of you, but they may just drill you deeper, ask why you can't make it out there and you may even seem like a cheap basterd if the banker is really an asshole.

Your best bet is to have them fly you out here without the hotel. Crash at the airport and suck it up.

Good luck.

Maybe I was just lucky, but I seldom met any asshole interviewers when I was recruiting. Yes, there are some, but they won't likely fault the guy for not flying out on his own dime. It's a fairly last-min flight, so it'd be costly. If the bank is too cheap to fly the guy out there, they aren't going to turn around and say 'you're too cheap for not making it out there'.

They could drill you more, but that's only natural when people give questions and get the right answers - they'll give harder ones to test the candidate further. Reality is, even if you have notes, if you don't understand concepts, it won't help because it'll come across on the phone. They really just serve as quick reminders to jolt the memory on concepts.

Well - every bank is different. I guess if a bank is too frugal to fly the guy, they can't blame him and say 'sorry, guess we won't be interviewing you'.
