Teach for America: Can I come back from this decision?

Hey all,

I'm current a senior student at a large state uni studying accounting/finance. Will be doing one year of grad school to get an MS Finance. I've had an accounting internship (Big 4) and have an upcoming SA gig with a BB within their Commercial Bank. Early apps for TFA 2019 Corps close next month, and I've been thinking more and more about applying. Ideally, I want to work in IB or a similar role as my first finance job, but is doing TFA a hindrance? I know it's viewed as a great experience and actually gives you a boost in applying for positions and bschools, but is 2 years away too much? If I get the FT offer, should I stick it out in the CB role and try to transfer internally or externally?

I care deeply about the mission of TFA as I come from the background of schools TFA targets. Candidly, if I didn't care so damn much about money/prestige the choice would be simple. Money is another factor... turning down 6 figures for a teacher's salary... I know my opportunities if I don't do it (CB, maybe B4, try for a FT IB offer next fall), but my real concern is how would I go about landing IB after going TFA?

I'll add that I think I'll want to go to bschool at some point, whether to advance my finance career or change my trajectory. Sorry for rambling guys, I'd just like some insight/opinions. I understand this is an extremely personal decision, but any experience or advice helps as I mull over this for the next few weeks.

How valuable are the career services that you have in place at your state uni? If they facilitate solid placement in IB, then you're giving up a lot by going the TFA route. You will be able to network in with enough effort post-TFA, but it's going to take much more individual effort since you're not in the pipeline.

If career services doesn't do that much, then TFA is probably a good route because it's an interesting differentiator (as long as you can get the interview).

If you cared you would be doing TFA. Most teachers in these prison camps aka “schools” fucking hate TFA.

Make money and donate to pre K, private school and scholarships. That will help. Wasting a year talking to kids with no fathers, prenatal damage and a criminal system set up against them does nothing.

Can you come back? Sure. MBA programs love that shit and you’ll be fine. Banks that love this crap as well.
