Thank you e-mail for phone interview?
Had a phone interview today. At the end, the interviewer said the usual "feel free to follow up with me or the HR guy."
My question is, is it a good idea to send him a thank-you email?
The reason I ask is because:
a) it was a phone interview
b) he did not give me his e-mail address but I found it on the company website
thoughts?
it really doesn't make a difference. by the time you sent a thank you letter, decision would have already been made
Do you really think so? They are conducting phone interviews throughout the week, with more to go after me.
I just don't want to come across as rude if I don't send one, and at the same time, I don't want to seem silly if I he doesn't expect me to send him one but I do.
Do you think he expects a thank you e-mail?
Would anyone really think you're silly for saying thank you? It can only help.
I usually send thank you emails to interviewers after the interview, even telephone interviews. In most cases, I found that if the interviewer replies back to the thank you email, its a good sign. No return email usually means they probably won't be progressing you further. Again, this doesn't always happen but in most cases.. well, atleast with me!

point taken
i just don't want to come across as creepy since I had to search for his email address- this is the main thing holding me back.
would you send him a thank you given the circumstances?
So it is true that a decision will probably already have been made by the time you send out a thank you e-mail. However, it's always good and courteous to do so, especially if you only had an interview with one person (as opposed to a Super Day where you could have 12 interviews...that gets tough to do Thank You letters). It can only help, especially if you do move on to the second round.
yes good points.
i emailed him, because i figured that since it is common courtesy to do so, i probably should, as there is a chance i am the only person he interviewed today and if that is the case, he would definitely remember that i did not email him.
thanks for your input
is it true that if they dont reply your thank you emails it probably means u got dinged?
i think you guys are thinking too much into this. i have received replies to my thank you emails, only to get rejected days later. wen u finish your interview, they write a report. then your decision is sealed
thank you email = being polite, but not going to make or break
From the interviewee's perspective:
I usually sent out thank you letters after every single interview I do. If they didn't give me their email address/name card I will try my best to find out. Thank you letters shouldn't be long, it should just say: 1) thank you 2) saying that the discussion on xxx was very interesting 3) you look forward to this opportunity
From the interviewer's perspective:
Thank you letter is not the decisive factor in the process, however it will be useful though for borderline candidates, who some times I will push into the next round if they wrote a nice thank you letter that is tailored made instead of the general ones you copy and paste.
Be a dick and send a a back-handed, insulting, email. It shows confidence and will make them want you even more. Same approach works for picking up women. Don't you guys know "the game"??
Example:
Sir,
Thanks for the phone interview. I think I might consider working there, but I really need to see if my other options pan out first. I would really kick myself if XYZ firm gave me an offer after locking in with you.
Later.
Hi,
I agreed with you. Any way, your ideal make me thinking about some thing for my project.
Apart from that, this link below may be useful: Interview thank you letter Pls try to keep posting.Tks and best regards

do you send thank you emails after recruiter phone interview? (Originally Posted: 11/03/2016)
I usually always send after in person with hiring managers but do you guys send one after a basic "run me through your resume" phone interview with a recruiter?
Yes, in my opinion, you should always send a thank you to your interviewer
Following up to a first-round phone interview (conference call) - who to thank?! (Originally Posted: 11/21/2017)
I recently had a first round phone interview with an IB team in my city. I only really had a chance to speak with (and field questions from) 2 senior members of the group, but another 2 or 3 associates/analysts were supposedly on the call as well, and listening in.
I'd like to follow up with a thank you email, but I'm not sure how to proceed... should I reach out only to the senior bankers I spoke with, or the whole group? Should I send notes individually or cc people in on a single msg? Maybe I should only reach out to my HR rep?
:/ what do you guys think?
You can send a note to the senior folks in one email thanking them for the time and expressing your interest in the position. You can play it by ear on the analysts/associates, but I used to shoot them notes individually to personalize it a bit, though this is subject to individual preference.
Hope all goes well with you on the interview, and that you proceed to the superday :)
phone interview follow-up (Originally Posted: 12/23/2009)
Hey guys,
This is my first post so please be gentle haha. I just had a phone interview this morning for a MM ER internship, and when I was asked a few brain teaser questions I made some stupid mathematical errors from being put on the spot that I normally would never make. Anyways, my GPA and the fact that I'm in a selective investing program at my school should show that I'm not an idiot hopefully, but should I mention my screw up in the follow up thank you email that I'm sending? Or should I just forget about it and thank him and not bring it up/remind him. I think my thought process in solving them was good at least. Thanks for your input.
I'd recommend not bringing it up. It will just cause the interviewer to focus on that and potentially forget about the positive parts of the interview, especially since you are happy with your thought process for those problems.
Simply thank them and forget about it.
Agreed, don't bring up anything negative in the thank you. Honestly, they have made their decision already and nothing you say in the thank you is going to correct the mistakes you may have made. The interview is over, nothing you can do to change it, so don't stress over it!
Good luck!
Alright great, thanks guys.
what was the brain teaser??
Sorry for taking so long to reply.
Umm one of them was how long would it take to walk from the city I am from to the city where the internship is, another was how many footlong subs would fit on a basketball court, and lastly how many babies were born last year in the U.S.
^weak shit.
walk: 3 days 22 hours 18 minutes subs: 875 if dismantled and packed big fetuses: 8,403,982
JK. From past experience those are the easier brain teasers...mostly because you can make shit up (which you should do if you get another). The harder ones have definitive answers that the interviewers know in advance. That being said I screwed up one of the latter pretty bad in a superday and still got the job. I agree, don't mention it and just send a glowing message about how much you loved the experience/people/blah blah.
Follow up email to phone interview (Originally Posted: 08/07/2010)
Hey guys, Im currently a rising junior wanting who is gonna be applying for Junior SA internships this coming spring (not an uncommon story). I had a phone interview for an IBD internship for this coming fall which I really wanted to do. Now I am usually not that bad in interviews if they are regular in person interviews but for some reason I fumble during phone interviews. Now this phone interview didn't go that bad ( i didn't mess up anything) but I thought I could've done a hell lot better (by not stuttering or being a bit more clearer with the point I was making).
I wanted to send my interviewer a traditional follow up email after my phone interview but I was wondering whether I should tell him something regarding why I was stuttering or not being very precise during the interview and that I do a lot better in person? I know this sounds kind of unorthodox or too much but I was really interested in this internship and wanna try everything I can to get it. What do you guys think? Any advice will be really appreciated. Thanks!
nah, you dont want to remind him that you were stuttering.
