Tier Ranking of Fonts

Hey everyone,

Surprisingly relevant post about font choices and their impact on presentations in IB. Here’s a tier ranking of fonts based on their use in banks. Let’s dive into the buckets:

Tier 1: Classic and Professional

  1. Times New Roman • Investment Banks: Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley • Why: It’s the gold standard for professionalism. Its traditional serif style is often used in formal documents and presentations to convey reliability and respectability.

  2. Arial • Investment Banks: J.P. Morgan, Bank of America • Why: Simple and clean, Arial is a versatile sans-serif font that works well for a modern look while maintaining clarity and professionalism.

  3. Calibri • Investment Banks: Citi, Deutsche Bank • Why: This font offers a contemporary feel with its rounded edges and is commonly used in internal communications and presentations for its readability.

Tier 2: Modern and Clean

  1. Helvetica • Investment Banks: UBS, Barclays • Why: Known for its sleek and neutral appearance, Helvetica is popular in branding and digital presentations. It’s modern but still professional.

  2. Verdana • Investment Banks: HSBC, Wells Fargo • Why: Designed for clarity on screens, Verdana is often used in digital presentations and online documents to ensure text is legible and accessible.

Tier 3: Specialized and Niche

  1. Garamond • Investment Banks: Lazard, Evercore • Why: Elegant and classic, Garamond is used for specific types of formal presentations or documents where a touch of sophistication is desired.

  2. Tahoma • Investment Banks: RBC, Nomura • Why: While similar to Verdana, Tahoma has a more compact appearance, making it suitable for detailed reports and data-heavy presentations.

Feel free to share other fonts you think should make the list. Comic Sans?

WF uses custom fonts. “Wells Fargo Sans” not sure what it’s closest to but is so annoying having to use that vs default fonts.
