Transfering schools a good idea?

I am only in first year, so transfering wouldn't be much of a big deal.

I am currently at the University of Toronto in their B.Comm program. I have been told by numerous poeple (one person who used to actually be an investment banker in Paris, i believe) that my chances of knowing people and having more connections to the field are greater if I go to Queen's University.

From the start I knew Queen's was a more Finance-focused school, whereas Toronto seems to specialize more in Accounting (which I have seen first hand...almost all of my peers are wanting to pursue an accounting career, or at least get an accounting designation).

So then obvious question here is, should I consider a transfer to Queen's?

Besides giving up the big city and the good night life, I don't think my university experience would be very different going to Queen's. I already know a lot of people who are at Queen's now, only they are in the Life Science program, not Commerce.  Oh and furthermore, Kingston (where Queen's is) is close to Toronto as it is.

Is that what they are?  If that's the case, wouldn't that mean my friends/hook ups will probably be better (hence I will have a greater chance of meeting people who know important people haha)

hahahahahahaha.  uggs haha.

Well, I dunno...either way (UT of Queens), i'd be coming out with a B.Comm from a good school.  But if I think i can get recruited into the finance industry easier at queen's, then that's the reason to transfer right there.  Then other things to consider would be the social life...which can't be bad at Queen's right?

No. I went to another top Canadian school but I had friends at Queens and they all liked it. I would have thought the social life at UT would suck given how massive and spread out the school is (one of the reasons I didn't go there). Queens is the opposite extreme. I think the atmosphere in Bcom is quite competitive and keener so be ready to work hard. But ultimately if you want lots of recruiting options to BB or CAD banks - a Queens BCom with a high GPA will land you plenty of interviews. I've been out of school a couple of years now but back when everyone was interviewing, the top 3 schools on the canadian circuit were Ivey, Queens and McGill. Next tier would be UT and Schulic. But maybe things have changed. Like I said, if I were you and I had the option to transfer, I would. But maybe you'd want a second opinion from someone who went to either school.

Sounds great. Thank you for your well thought out response to my question.

See, even though, yes, U of T may be considered second tier when it comes to Finance, a person can be extremely successful, but you have to outshine a signifcant portion of your peers. I know one person who graduated from U of T last year who is now in investment banking, but she had just out of this world marks and extra curricular activities on her resume, not to mention a top internship at PwC.

I figure at Queen's, I will not only have a higher chance of being recruited, but I don't have the pressure of being the ultimate number one absolute best student in the world to land myself an interview. Afterall, I'm not rocket scientist...in fact my marks now are around the 3.7 range and I'm in first year.

Right now I am outwaying the pros and cons of transfering, and at this point in time the only thing I can see as a 'con' to transfering to Queen's is that it's a lot smaller than what I've now become used to here at U of T, and I will be 1 year behind the majority of the students in the program in terms of how comfortable they are with the program and its expectations.

Thank you ehf, and I look forward to what others have to share.

If your going to transfer, transfer to Ivey since a) the recruiting is slighly better b) the program actually starts in third year so you wont feel like an outsider, like you would at Queens because everyone would have known each other by second year.

If you believe the last Times Higher Education '07 ranking, McGill is the best, ranking 12th in the world and 8th in NA, one spot behind Columbia. Cornell is #20. However, rankings aside, Cornell is probably better situated for interviews at BB banks. And McGill's business school is not ranked as high as the school as a whole. Ivey is best in Canada, but University of Western Ontario (where Ivey is) is largely second tier.
