Uncertain Networking Situation

So I was emailing fund managers and investment banks today as part of regular netowrking and one director at a small 1-3 person shop replied. he said theres no internships available but wants to meet for coffee, is it worth it? ive already met tons of people for coffee only to get no job

Obviously it's worth it. There is no harm in meeting with this guy. Don't ever avoid anyone just because they are at a smaller/less prestigious firm. It'll bite you in the ass. Go with it and I guarantee you will feel better about yourself.

While he may not be able to take on an intern, he could easily refer you to someone that he is good friends with who could. He realizes what you're trying to do and wouldn't take up your time to meet if he couldn't at least pass your contact info on.

You should meet him. When people don't have internships for me, they sometimes refer me to another colleague. You should see this as an opportunity to network, not to get a job. It doesn't hurt to chat with someone in your targeted industry just for career advice. As the previous posters said, don't belittle him because of the size of his firm. Remember that Buffet supposedly picked an unknown guy to manage his fund.

i was operating under all 3 of yall's logic for the last few months and it never really did anythang for me...

I think the guy either wants to convince me to work as an unpaid slave, or wants to be a bully/mentor of some sort...

1- We only gave you our opinions, but, you are free to make your own choice.

2- You think that he wants to convince you to work as an unpaid slave. Surprise! Surprise! You are the who contacted him right? Did you expect him to have a royal job for you?

3- How old are you? You can always say no if he ask you to work for him.

4-It seems that you already had the answer to your question, so I don't see why you were asking us for our opinions.

This is why your jobless and posting a thread like this. Sorry not every person you cold call is going to call back saying he'd love to have you as an intern and pay you 60k prorated. Doesn't work like that.

Maybe you'll have to slave a little bit in the early stages to have a greater reward at the end. But what do I know...

The answer to your question is 1) network 2) get involved 3) beef up your resume 4) repeat -happypantsmcgee WSO is not your personal search function.
