Undergrads that teach Financial Modeling
Talked to the president of a Capital Markets Group with mid-market banking friday and he said one thing that may hold me back from the competition is my lack of financial modeling skills. My school doesn't teach this and I can only think of a couple schools that might teach a financial modeling course or courses (NYU, Bentley). Anyone know of Undergrads that teach this? I assume the kids that do know how to do financial modeling went through a SA program of some sort.
I know that Cornell offers some financial modeling classes, but they are through the Johnson School.
.
At my school students can take MBA level courses if they wish, so a lot of finance-oriented kids take Corporate Finance at the business school where the cover DCFs and the general ins-and-outs of modeling
i am confused. what capital mkts pres guy told you this?
a lack of financial modeling skills at the ugrad level should be irrelevant. bulge bracket banks and i am sure middle mkt banks too have a pretty sophisticated and comprehensive training pipeline to get you up to speed on finance, acct, excel and powerpoint. in fact, ibanks tend to recycle old excel model templates.
also, how would harvard econ majors get jobs at ibanks if they didnt have previous modeling experience? trust me, they dont teach that skill set at ivy league ugrads.
i think that capital mkts president guy was referring to working exp with finaincial modeling, not class room exp with financial modeling.
I am pretty sure every undergrad b-school does.... we went over a basic LBO model last semester in one of my classes
There isn't a single course you can take at my target that will teach you financial modeling (the closest thing are some electives in corporate finance and financial accounting) and it might take you a couple fingers at most to count the number of undergrad business programs (that offer financial modeling) that send more people to BBs for ibanking than the school i attended.
I wouldn't use financial modeling classes as a guide for UG business school. Just get the BIWS modeling guide and learn it there. Building a DCF really isn't rocket science and knowing excel is something that takes time and repeated use. If you really need a modeling class just find a close by school that offers it and try and take just one class there.
UNC teaches financial modeling undergrad at kenan flagler. they even have specific classes preparing you for M&A, Investment Banking, etc.
Are you in an undergrad b-school?
I would think most undergrad corporate finance classes cover enough financial modeling to get you started.
