I found it to be quite good and the responses from the email chain were surprisingly positive. Maybe it will get him some interviews.

The truth is I have no unbelievably special skills or genius eccentricities, but I do have a near perfect GPA and will work hard for you. I’ve interned for Merrill Lynch in the Wealth Management Division and taken an investment banking class at ***, for whatever that is worth.
I am currently awaiting admission results for **** Masters of Science in Accountancy program, which I would begin this fall if admitted. I am also planning on attending law school after my master’s program, which we spoke about in New York. I apologize for the blunt nature of my letter, but I hope you seriously consider taking me under your wing this summer. I have attached my resume for your review. FYI - I've had this letter recirculate back to me about 3 times today, I'm pretty sure every bank on the street has called him as far as I can tell. And I haven't seen a single negative comment about it.
Quite frankly, the kid is honest, and doesn't beat around the bush. Unfortunately, this is something that can only be done by one person once.
I think the majority of people, 70%, that want to get into investment banking are just as eager as that kid. It's just that most people are discouraged from writing a cover letter like that 1. because it doesn't follow the M&I template or being unique is put down and 2. people say cover letters are of little importance. Regardless, that guy is probably shitting himself. Good for him.
I honestly couldn't tell if people were being sarcastic or genuine in the entire chain. Also, which banks actually called him? I know from the email chain that wound up in my inbox at least a couple did, but I'm curious to see where this ends up.
