Hi everyone,

I have an opportunity for a long-term internship in NYC at a good boutique and I have a few questions regarding salary, cost of living in NYC...because the company asked me how much will I need to live in NYC...

  • What are basically the rates for an analyst intern in NYC at a good IB boutique?

  • How much do you need to live in NYC, including a fully furnished apartment, food, entertainment and so on...?

Thanks for your recommendations.

PS: If you have any tips for an agency or an apartment or anything else, it would be great.

Long term internship? Are we talking 10 weeks or a year? That changes what you need to be looking for in terms of housing. You can probably find housing with a roommate or two for anywhere between 1k and 2k per month depending on what kind of place you want to live in.

Assuming you have dinner paid for by the firm pretty much every night, I would assume $25-30 per day for food (probably less during the week but more on the weekends if you have time off, and this allows you to go out for a nice meal every once in a while if you get out of the office) and then I usually allocate myself about $100 per week for "entertainment" but I tend to keep it pretty cheap.

All-in, with all your other misc expenses (clothes, cell phone, etc) I would say you need about 3k per month after taxes... or at least thats what I allocate myself which leaves me with a little bit of savings from my salary.

You can live in brooklyn or queens for very cheap, but you're going to need a min of 1500 and the bank better pay for transportation and dinners and have a lot of other perks. 8 months is a little long, are they giving you any hope at a FT offer once complte, or maybe hiring you outright? not to hijack the thread here, but you should be asking for as much as you can get and questioning this internship. good luck.

Ask for standard salary. A friend of mine interned for a year actually but you need at least 4k a month to live in NY (before tax) - remember if you do 8 months you're in a higher tax bracket than other interns

Why not just do pro-rated analyst pay?
