What does this guy do? (GS FIG)
Hi,
I stumbled across this profile:
https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=16911730…
He has a "Master of Financial Engineering" (MFE) which is a quant finance degree. Based on his bio on his program's website, he's now working in the "Financial Institutions Group" at GS IBD.
Just wondering: is that the GS FIG that everyone here talks about? Or is that some sort of quant/strat group within GS FIG?
If you read his job responbsibilities, it does sound a little bit more quantitative than traditional IB work, but it also looks like relevant transactions for financial institutions (e.g. asset sales and hedges).
Curious to hear from experts here.
He is not in IBD FIG from what I can see. Maybe MO/BO function, not really sure. Some other users could probably provide better info. Bump
It says he is "an expertise in FIG sector", so his work probably revolves around that segment. This doesn't make him in IBD
It looks like he is IBD FIG.
I know of another Berkeley MFE guy who works in that group. They are in the business of advising bank and insurance clients (carriers, reinsurers, etc.) on asset allocation and portfolio management, paying particular attention to the regulatory implication.
For example, insurers are subject to Solvency II, this GS group will work on using some sort of MVO with regulatory constraints to come up with an allocation recommendations.

So you're saying that it's a team within GSAM? Here is another similar profile where it's clearly stated as 'FIG IBD':

So it seems that it is a more quant focused group, where analysts probably don't do the traditional modelling work like probably this guy:

I'm wondering if they are viewed as two different divisions within IBD, or if they're essentially part of the same team only with different responsibilities, since they are both called "IBD FIG"
I guess anyone can claim to be IBD, if you ain't doing pitch book and getting slaved 100+ hours a week, then that person is just IBD-ing in his / her own world. Who knows, maybe org structure-wise, they are under Investment Banking division. A MFE kid in FIG IBD, I am just skeptical how he won against Ivy League fresh undergrads, they are cheaper slaves, you should message this guy and see if he knows how to tie three statements together lol,
Yes, my friend's group is in GSAM.
He could be a part of the unit which advises financial institutions on complex matters. Morgan Stanley has a similar unit called FIG Solutions under their Global Capital Markets division. According to a number of articles, the guy "...ran a team that advised lenders on capital structure and regulatory issues..."
You should check this out: http://www.marketwatch.com/story/morgan-stanley-opens-global-fig-market…

Looks like GS doesn't advertise its unit as much as MS does.
Got a reply:
It's back office, all they do is doing risk calculations and prepair regulatory reports for the Fed, in order to SUPPORT the "real" GS FIG bankers.
Of course, the Berkeley MFE office is always proud to tell "we have x students each year who go work at GS FIG" - LOL is all I can say.
What I expected. Thanks for the update.
