What major at Brown for investment banking?
What major at Brown would be optimal for investment banking and finance jobs. Besides investment banking, im also interested in quant roles like Jane Street/two sigma. I guess the choices are Economics, Buisness Entrepeneurship and Operations, or some sort of Applied Math major. Which would leave the most doors open, but also allow me to get a high gpa at Brown.
If you want a shot at Jane Street, obviously the advice would be to go pure math. I'm not sure if it's such a smart idea, as they are routinely considered to have one of the most challenging interview process at any firm that rivals Google. I'd say play it safe with Economics / COE. Pretty sure you can opt to take some of your difficult classes for no grade as well, which is amazing.
ya I also think it would be foolish to just do math in hopes of getting such a hard job. Im not even the best or smartest person at math so probably would not work out. Between economics and the beo which would be best. On the career page it seems like almost all the people who went into ib were econ majors but the beo has a buisness economics track that has classes in corporate finance and like investments and stuff and I think that would be a lot more interesting thatn pure economics. Is it just more personal preference or does one major have an advantage for recruiting? Thanks for the reply btw
Don't trust the career page - look on LinkedIn, do an advanced search and use the keywords for the respective major you're looking for and see who's in IB. At any school that's a target, major doesn't matter at all as long as you know your stuff. Perhaps the Econ students would have an easier time in the interview process and won't get grilled as hard as the COE kids (or BEO, whatever they call it now). Do whatever interests you more.
Study what interests you. If it's IB or trading, math, stats, econ, and finance are just fine. comp sci if you want to do quant stuff.
Personally I'd say econ/stats major, Minor in comp sci and or math .
Also for networking purposes, look up alums via LinkedIn in the jobs you are interested in, and ASK them. It's great to show initiative early on, and keep in touch with them.
