What to do if the staffer never asks you to rejoin the group?

I am a junior right now and I worked at a BB last summer in IBD. I thought I had a pretty good connection with all the guys at work and did ok during the summer. When I got the return offer, I told them that I would love to come back to the same group again and they said they are excited for me to come back next summer. Well today I learned that the new staffer had called a couple of the sophomore kids who I interned with and asked if they wanted direct spots to the group (bypassing the traditional group placement ranking process) but I never got the call. Should I take it as a cue to start looking at other groups? Not sure if I should reach out to the new staffer if they never contact me.

I've never experienced this situation before but, I'd say it's obvious something is being lost in translation from the old staffer to the new staffer.

I'd suggest you contact either, the highest level member of the group that you know or whoever you built the strongest relationship with in the group and explain the situation, stating that you'd like to be placed in that group.

If you don't feel comfortable with that I might call the staffer directly and explain your preference. As long as you're polite and come at it with the right attitude the worst thing the staffer could do would be to tell you no. if you did that, I don't see a scenario where you'd risk losing the return offer.
