What's up with these summer MSF start date? Summer Job Conflict?
Hey all,
Having glanced through most MSF threads on WSO, I don't think any of one of them addresses this issue so I figured I'd make a post.
As we all know, getting a good SA position is 90% of the fight in breaking into FT IB. When that hasn't been realized by Soph/Junior year, a common redeeming effort is through a 5th year of MSF.
- Vanderbilt MSF: There's one single course (Fin Econ) that begins on July 27, but even the August 13 MOD I (?) start date is still cutting it pretty close to the typical June to Mid-August SA timelines
- UT-Austin: "Duration is 10 months from July to next May" - no way to work that summer (or at least hard to expect a return offer by leaving early)
- USC: "starts in the end of May" - this is even more strange since many west coast undergrads don't even end until mid-June
- UVA: starts August 12 - might be okay
- Princeton: normal September start date
How are prospective MSF candidates suppose to do a summer internship given these bizarre start dates? I'm almost wondering if MSF is meant for students who graduated without any SA/FT offers? If so, what happens when you graduate MSF - become a SA or FT Analyst?
All insights are welcomed.
Thanks,
Hi eyebee-throwaway, hope I can help. Do any of these links cover what you're looking for:

It so you can get a head start on recruiting. You do some pre-networking before the program begins and then you can hit the ground running day one. Plenty of people still do an internship the summer before the program
MakersMark,
Thanks for the reply. My undergrad ends in mid-June and let's say I decide to go to UT Austin. I still don't understand how I could complete an IB SA program - work for 2 or 3 weeks and leave?
Alternatively, let's say I decide on USC - that program would start before I even graduate.
Is the idea here to just skip SA, graduate from MSF, then start FT right away?
