Where to Live in Hong Kong

Hey Guys,

Has anyone here worked in Hong Kong? I am scheduled to work in the financial district and need to find housing. I would like to live on the Island, not to far away from the financial district (preferably a 10-20 minute commute). Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

I suggest you settle down first in a serviced apartment while looking for longer term housing

I stayed in cityloft (soho, 8-10 mins WALK to IFC) while did my summer there. My friend also stayed in serviced apartment for about 1.5 month before he found his housing

blackberrythanks for the input. how did you like living in Soho?

Living in Soho is FUN, but as analyst you don't get time off too much to enjoy anyway...

Pro: location location location, very close to work and LKF (so you can go back home quickly when you are super drunk on Saturday night...) Sunday brunch with friend is also just 5 mins from your house.

Con: tiny apartment, my room costs 7000 HKD/month and yet it was the cheapest I could find after searching online for ages

Overall I think it is a good place for single people to live (minimize their commute time while play hard and work hard). My VP is single and he lives just two streets above me in Soho as well

HK monkey, no I am not getting allowance specifically for housing.

250-300 is very small indeed but it's within my price range and close to where I'm going to be working (Garden Road). Can any one recommend any other place to live that's within 5-10 minutes walk from IFC

Well, if you are not getting allowance then you may want to reconsider your choice based on "WHAT YOU WANT"

  1. True, soho is convenient, but are you willing to put in 20 ~ 25% of your salary for a small place

  2. Remember the mid-level escalator stops at mid-night, so if you live in soho you will WALK up the hills almost everynight (while you can just take a taxi if you live in other places, and reimburse it later). But of course morning will be really fast cuz you are walking down the escalator to work ;)

  3. Serviced apartment is only for temporary, ultimately you need to figure out "WHAT YOU WANT"(convenience? cheaper rent? large room? or share a roommate?) and find your long-term housing based on that

10K is going to get you a decent place especially if you go for non serviced apartment.

Try looking around Sheung Wan and Wan Chai, travel time door to door to Central is still 10-15 minutes

you're not getting housing? Garden road has like 4 banks ... Citi, ML, and GS and DB in Cheung Keong

and all 4 of those places give you housing ...

for 12k you can get a decent place in Wanchai or Causeway or Sheungwan - you don't need to live in Soho ... a cab a day will still save you money overall and don't get serviced you can get a maid for about 1/10 that to come clean your aptment
