Who ACTUALLY gets ahead

Recent realization that people who eventually grow to the top of the IB profession are rarely 'corporate finance' gurus. They're extremely smart, ruthless and often imaginatively intellectual. One trait across most seems to be that they're very focused on winning, almost to a psychopathic extent.

Haven't been in the profession long enough to know - but if any of your peers hold top positions / eventually ended up running their own banks - what were they like when they were ANs/ASOs?

I think across my peers and people who are more senior:
- intelligent (they know what they are doing)
- ability to generate revenue (good enough with clients/people)
- many are multi-lingual/have traveled/worked in different countries
- top tier education (not every single person, but most); linked to intellect/being smart
- willing to work hard

There is a level of politics they need to handle, but that is only a portion of the job.
