Will Product Manager Internship Hamper my chances for IB?

Hello,

I am getting an Digital Product Manager Internship this summer (unfortunately the only offer I got), it is in one of the largest British banks however and I feel networking opportunity is vast. I am a sophomore so can always try better next summer cycle and worked previously in big four as an intern for risk.

I do not feel this is relevant to IBD whatsoever, where I mainly want to be and have a feeling that taking this will hamper my chances. However my mentors at my previous internship informed me that several Investment Bankers seek Product Management as an exit. How true is that? Will this hamper my chances in the next cycle?

And mainly, how can I sell this on my CV as to being relevant to IBD M&A/LevFin where I mainly wanna apply next year? The only thing I can think of at the moment is my leadership experience as I was informed I might have to lead a team of 3 on a new project they are starting soon or something.

Thank you so much

Thanks, that really sounds good. Any ways in which I couldn't sell it off to IB people and make it sound more IB appealing on my CV? Some tasks I should actively take knowing they will be relevant and impressive for IB?

Broadly, no experience is a bad experience. If you have nothing else it's better to work to build your CV. This won't hamper your chances, but it won't improve them materially.

The Product Management exit is NOT what you are doing. You will be in the back office of the bank, helping manage projects which help most probably retail/SME customers or the front office.

Product Management's exit is at Tech firms/start-ups where you are developing/responsible for a product/business (imagine creating and running Google Maps). Whilst they sound similar, the latter is very different.

Your best bet is to network when you get there and get exposure. Understanding what different parts of the bank/people's roles are is very useful information in future interviews for IB.

Thank you so much!

I will still try for some Boutique shops in winter if I can. Any takes on the type of tasks I should actively seek that are IB relevant?

Also side question but will doing online programs/courses help? I've been told that being able to talk through LBOs will give me a solid edge? What's ur take?
