Equity management?
How far along in your med training?
ivote: not very far. I completed 4 years of medical school.
a posse: When I was an undergraduate, one of the graduates from my university's med sch went into equity management.
What fields in business do you feel would be suited for a physician who majored in computer science in college?
I would do something related to health care.
why are you switching?
You are gonna face some serious questions about why you are switching and better have some surprisingly good answers. Dude you just finished 4 years of Med school....why would you switch fields NOW.
prinmemo: I think doing so would be helpful. I would have something to bring to the table (my MD). would you please elaborate?
englishtoffee: lol. so many reasons. The short answer is that I've been interested in economics for a long time.
A time machine.
WSO is not the best place for this conversation, as this thread indicates. There are a number of doctors on wall street, though more so in VC/PE than banking though they are here as well. Biotech/Pharma/Providers are a huge and growing market and physicians provide a level of expertise and marketability that firms value. Search linkedin for examples.
Where you went to med school will matter a lot - the school's brand perception more so than its ranking ie) Cornell is probably better than U. Washington or Pitt, even though these are ranked higher in medicine.
Look into MBA programs.
Also consider consulting. Many physicians work at MBB.
jsmort: It's true. People will question my motivation and commitment. I don't know if it will be a good enough answer, but it wasn't really a switch in interests.
I've always been interested in economics and analysis. I maintained my own mock portfolio since elementary school. I was a student leader in econ interest groups in college and med sch. I also did some computer analysis work for a business professor for my senior thesis.
I've learned something about medicine since then. Analysis, creativity, and synthesis of new strategies in medicine are often relegated to "research," an occupation that often leaves you scraping by, living from research grant to research grant. One of my friends just walked down that route. After going through hell to get into a good residency, surviving a cut throat residency, and ultimately giving up a good income, he went into research. I'm trying to be proactive and to explore my options.
interestedguy: What VC and PE message boards would you recommend? I'm new to linked in. How can I used linkedin to search?
I went to an excellent med sch and an excellent undergraduate school. Both are well known brand names, but I've accumulated a significant student loan paying for the tuition to these brand name schools.
One of my concerns is that I didn't major in economics. How much of a disadvantage is that? I didn't major in economics because my undergraduate University has a strong business school and I didn't want to jeopardize my GPA, which I needed to get into the med sch of my choice.
MBA programs seem like a logical option. It'll be another investment of time and money though. I would like to figure out which direction I'm going before I start studying GMAT and applying for an MBA. What time of the year should I start studying GMAT/ applying for an MBA?
Consulting is another possibility. What is MBB? I heard that McKinsey is one of the few groups that actively recruits physicians. Are there any others? Do I have to complete an internship before I apply for a job? I think the deadline for applying for a summer internship has passed. Are there off cycle internships or other options?
What is Equity Management?
