I posted this here because although I'm not looking for a "job" but an internship, I think you guys might be able to help me.
So I'm desperately looking for finance related internships between fall 2012 and summer 2013. I'm taking a year off (sort of a gap year between my studies) after a get my bachelor degree in economics from a Swiss uni in August.
I'm willing to go anywhere in the world basically: Paris, London, New York, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, Sydney, Toronto, Frankfurt, Geneva, etc... I'd love to experience something new, a new culture, be more responsible and meet new people.
I still have to do my CV, I have no experience to date, only academics. Also, do you think that being a semi-pro athlete for the past 3 years can be an advantage?

I'm also relatively new to this whole finance thing (only switched over a year and a half ago), so I understand your confusion. That being said, I have been battling it out in the recruiting game for the past 2 recruiting cycles so here are some tips I've picked up along the way (Note this is for Europe where all applications are done online and screened . there is no OCR, only bonus "points" for going to a target school. Recruiting in the US is a whole other game apparently and I have no clue how it works)
I think being a pro-athlete will help, especially with S&T from my experience (I've met loads of guys with an athletic background at assessment centres and interviews). Also, I know a lot of guys end up talking about sports (ahem football/soccer) in their interviews which allows them to build more rapport with their male interviews and buys time away from mental maths and technical grilling.
Also, in Europe, make sure to apply to off-cycle internships with BBs. Much less competition than traditional summer internships and tbh a much better learning experience (non of that bull that summer "programs" have). It's pretty much a guaranteed first round if you go to a good school and have pretty good grades. So many of people from my school have gotten invited to a first round interview with NO relevant experience at all. If I could turn back time I would have honestly applied to all off-cycle internships instead of full-time this year.
You also have to do numerical and/or verbal and logical tests for most BBs and MMs in Europe and it's pretty important to score above the 90th percentile if you want to get shortlisted for an interview so make sure you practice those! Good sources include assessmentday.co.uk, wikijobs and the PSL and SHL official sites (the 2 usual providers)
