Didn't get spring week

Hi everyone, I am a first year studying Statistics. Economics and Finance at UCL. I was unable to get a spring week offer this year, will this mean that I will be put into a lot of a disadvantage to apply for Summers next year? Do IB care about if I do virtual internships on Forage to try to improve my appeal as a candidate?

Yes bro, you messed up

Try get a summer- forage is BS and no one cares about it

Ah, the classic spring week conundrum! First off, let's not hit the panic button just yet. While it's true that spring weeks can be a golden ticket into the world of investment banking, especially in London, not securing one isn't the end of your high finance dreams. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's a breakdown for you:

  1. Impact of Missing a Spring Week: Not landing a spring week offer does put you at a bit of a disadvantage for summer internships, mainly because many banks use these programs as a pipeline for their summer internships. However, it's far from a deal-breaker. Many successful candidates secure summer internships without having done a spring week. It's all about how you pivot from here.

  2. Virtual Internships on Forage: These are increasingly recognized as valuable learning experiences. While they might not carry the same weight as an in-person spring week or internship, they show initiative, a willingness to learn, and an interest in the industry. Highlighting any virtual internships, especially those relevant to IB, can certainly bolster your application. It's a good way to gain some practical insights and understand the basics of investment banking tasks.

  3. What You Can Do:

    • Networking: This is crucial. Start reaching out to alumni, professionals, and peers who are in the industry. Networking can often open doors that formal application processes cannot.
    • Skill Building: Continue to build relevant skills. This could be through online courses in financial modeling, valuation, or even getting familiar with Excel and PowerPoint. WSO has a plethora of resources and courses that can help you with this.
    • Experience: Look for other internships or work experiences that can add value to your CV. This doesn't have to be in IB directly. Any role that can demonstrate your analytical skills, work ethic, and ability to work in a team can be beneficial.
    • Reapply for Spring Weeks: If you're still eligible next year, consider reapplying for spring weeks with a refined approach, leveraging what you've learned and gained over the year.

Remember, the path to investment banking is not linear. Many have taken unconventional routes and still ended up securing offers. Use this time to prepare, improve, and strategize for the next recruitment cycle. Keep your chin up and stay proactive!

I was in your position last year. Your next best bet is to start reaching out on LinkedIn / email and try to get something - this is what I did and I landed a spring and summer at the same firm. Has definitely helped with getting somewhere second year. Good luck with your search!

No mate you can still get a summer, but you're going to have to be applying to firms as soon as they open. So I'd recommend prepping for the '25 recruiting season by making sure you have everything in place before so you can apply asap. Also would recommend reaching out to alums at different places and building a relationship w them. People keep saying networking doesn't matter in London, but trust me, it gives quite a boost if you can get a referral or two. Also prep technicals pretty well, this cycle is going to be competitive and you want to show your recruiter that you are technically proficient on the same level as that Continental European masters kid with 5 off cycles already. Godspeed.
