Incoming MF Intern Second Thoughts
Hey,
Rising Junior who signed at MF this past spring turning down some solid banks in the process. After seeing the poor return rates, I am feeling like I have made a mistake.
Does anyone have advice on how to get a return, what the FT process would be like w/out IB background, or staying an extra semester to re-recruit for IB (doubtful but curious)?
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks
It’s my understanding that intern class sizes for SA24 are significantly smaller than SA23 intern class sizes, so I would expect return offer rates to be higher. This is of course group dependent though.
That makes sense, I appreciate the response
They said this for 2023 as well
Stick it out man. Was probably just this year and they’ll need the associates
Just do your best. Work hard enough that if you don’t get a return there are a handful of associates and principals who would give you a solid reference. You’ll have good name brand on the resume and presumably solid experience.
Will do, very helpful thanks
Blackstones and KKR return rate very low (50%), don’t expect to get one for sure
Is this a genuine concern? I want to recruit for buyside next year and if you don't get a return isn't ib a step easier as long as you didn't massively fuck up. Like shouldn't ft be relatively easy to get a sellside offer for ft even if you didn't get a return for non performance factors.
In this boat right now - interned at a MF and did not get a return offer (market being down etc.). It’s still super tough to recruit and might need to go and do consulting instead.
Be very careful with your choice. I turned down some solid sell side shops for this and now I’m kicking myself for choosing the prestige.
I'm gonna shame because fuck them. I interned at Ares and I didn't get the return. Everyone was told that every intern has a FT position available for them but offers were a bloodbath. I wish I started rerecruiting over the summer, but I got blindsided. I wish I took other offers even after I got Ares. Fuck me I'm screwed.
Thanks for sharing — at your MF, did you feel like no returns was based on performance expectations or headcount cuts?
FT is literally never easy because there are barely spots open, and they’re not gonna prefer the kid with no return offer from PE over the kid with a return offer from solid bank.
I dislike this mentality that if return offer are low (50%), then you have to start looking elsewhere immediately or brace yourself for no return. Yes, keep your options open. Yes, always be prepared. And yes, understand the situation you are in.
But my guy, you haven’t even started your internship yet. First off, a lot can change in a year. Second off, for the sake of redundancy, I’ll refrain from giving you the cookie cutter advice on how to get a return, but rather tell you this cheesy fucking line.
It doesn’t matter where you start, but where you end. You have a whole year to prepare for this internship. Meet people at the firm beforehand. Show your enthusiasm in unique ways, and realize that if you do not get a return, you will be just fine. You made it here for a reason, and the only thing planting that seed of doubt in you is yourself.
I disagree as someone going through this right now. Recruiting in a bad job market without a return offer is another level of hellishness that I hope this person does not have to experience. It MUST be avoided at all costs.
I agree, in hindsight I wish I knew as well. I would've chosen differently.
