IR - Work/life balance and exit opportunities

Hey everyone,

I wanted some input from you all on what the exit opportunities are for someone working in IR and what the work/life balance is. The firm is fairly small and focuses only on IR. I have prior internships in IBD and was wondering if it would be possible after 2-3 years to transition into a HF after taking a CFA, or if its possible to make my way back into IB or even PE.

Any thoughts and insight would be appreciated.

IR is pretty cushy. Lots of folks have a CFA. Not sure how many eventually go into the industry (I'm sure they do).

However, usually I see it the other way around. Street-->IR at a F500.

Interesting. I was under the presumption that the CFA (finishing all levels) opened doors. Thanks for clearing that up though. The current situation I'm in is that I've already graduated and I have internships in IB. Just wondering if I should take this opportunity or network this recruiting season in Fall and try to break into the industry directly or just go for the IR position and network while I'm there as I'm taking the CFA.

 

Completing the CFA program does open doors. However, it will be an uphill battle to get "back in the game". It would be much easier now to go right into the industry (if possible). Also, CFA is only marginally useful in IB. Definitely not as encouraged as ER, AM

I know some IR guys at the big funds. As PKT said, really cushy job (you get paid to chill and shoot the shit). A lot of traveling though which can put a damper on family life. CFA is not really that necessary to be honest.

Exits are marriage to senior HF/PE guys or lateral to other funds. Job security can be an issue because you may only be needed for the fundraising portion.

It will be hard to transition
