Is it appropriate?

Hey folks,

I had a phone interview with a recruiter, we laughed a lot together, she said they would come back to me in 2 weeks, but it has been 3.

I have been thinking about sending an email with my former boss’s coordinates. We have a great relationship, she thinks I am a genius, and she agreed to back any exaggerations/distortions I would make about my experience.

Do you think it would be appropriate for me to hit up the recruiter and urge her to contact my former manager?

Thanks for your time.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, your approach could use some refinement. While following up after a phone interview is absolutely appropriate, the way you frame your email and the information you provide is crucial. Here are some key points to consider:

  1. Timing of Follow-Up: Since the recruiter mentioned a two-week timeline and it has been three weeks, it’s reasonable to follow up. Keep your tone polite and professional, and avoid sounding impatient.

  2. Content of the Email: Instead of urging the recruiter to contact your former manager, focus on expressing your continued interest in the role and politely inquiring about the status of your application. For example:

    • "I wanted to follow up regarding my application for [position] after our phone interview on Date. I remain very excited about the opportunity to join company and wanted to check if there are any updates on the process."
  3. Providing References: Offering your former boss’s contact information is fine, but it’s better to do so only if the recruiter requests it. Unsolicitedly pushing references might come across as overstepping.

  4. Professionalism: Avoid mentioning that your former boss would back "exaggerations/distortions." This could raise red flags about your credibility. Instead, highlight your genuine strengths and accomplishments.

  5. Tone: Keep the email concise, professional, and focused on your enthusiasm for the role and your willingness to provide any additional information they might need.

By following these guidelines, you’ll maintain a professional image and increase your chances of receiving a positive response.

Yeah, you can definitely follow up, but keep it casual—just check in on your status. Don’t push them to call your former boss; if they want references, they’ll ask. Also, careful with the “exaggerations.” If you’re the right fit, your experience should speak for itself. No need to force it.

Thanks for your answer, that’s also what my friend in recruiment said.

Unfortunately, my experience is not related to valuation, and I am located in Canada where they ask 2 years of experience for entry-level jobs. Yet, I am extremely motivated not to let circumstances dictate my future.

That’s why I’m not playing by the rules. You guys are blessed to be in the US, here, we gotta fight harder for less.
