Question about getting an Internship

Hello, I've been following the forums for a while and I have just signed up.

My question to you is that I am 24 years old, and I am graduating from a CUNY school in New York.

I have wanted to work on Wall Street since I was in High School. However my transcript and GPA are a bit of a problem.

Basically I was pre-med for a long time in college, because it seemed like a safer route to a good career. However as the years rolled by I realized I was plain miserable. I was reading the wall street journal, I was investing on my own with my personal savings, and just spending as much time as I could learning about the markets.

I am going to be graduating in Dec 2010 with a major in Economics.

My current gpa with my science courses is 3.25 and my gpa in my economics major is 3.37, however by the end of this semester in Dec 2010 I expect my Econ Gpa to be 3.6

I have taken Calculus I and II, Physics I and II (Algebra Based), Chemistry I and II, Organic Chemistry I and II and Biology I and II and Cell Biology.

My extracurriculars

  • President of Investment Club in High school and 2nd place winner of State wide competition held by the NYSE.

  • Volunteered in a hospital as a Health Coordinator, Dental Department, Emergency Room for a total of 500 hours.

-One year of Research in a Biology Lab

-Peer Advisor a year and a half for campus students, volunteered for a total of 300 hours

  • Completion of EMT certification in Nov 2010 (In progress)

Now the question becomes how much of a chance do I have at landing an internship at a Wall street firm.

My primary interest are in Securities Trading and complex products such as derivatives and new product structuring.

Should I give it a shot considering my GPA is low. I wish I had known what I really wanted always do what you love. I really know what that means now

post your resume..... so your cumulative gpa is a 3.3? that would be fine if you had extensive internships and ECs + college sport, but you don't seem to have any of that. you're f'ed

Ok, so your overall GPA is a 3.3/3.4 and your major GPA is a 3.6. That isn't horrible. You have a lot of hard science to explain the lowish GPA. You have the leadership experience, the interest in finance (NYSE comp) and you have some science research experience.

I would try and get a real finance internship and then sell yourself as a specialist who knows science, medicine, and finance. If you are in the city just start hitting up alumni or cold calling people.

Yeah I don't want a job, I just want a summer internship. I expect to work for free. I just want a company to give me a chance to intern with them.

My questions was that there are a lot of students and I was wondering if getting an internship would be impossible for me considering the competition.

Would there be a resource that listed all the smaller firms. The large firms all have a large internet presence, how does one go about finding out about the smaller ones.

is there a master list of all firms operating in the financial industry in NYC?

Guys I also had another idea, most of the students applying for summer internships dont take the GMAT. I was wondering what if I took the GMAT, did well and used that as a way to standout against the other students.

Has this strategy ever been employed
