Race/Ethnicity part of job application

This post is really meant for all forums.

When I apply for a job should I disclose my race and ethnicity in the "optional" section? Personally I feel it might work in my disadvantage by the way things have been evolving in the US during the past 10-15 years.
While this is an "optional section," which is not used to judge the applicant, all of these employers who ask for my race/ethnic info also claim that they are equal opportunity employers etc... I would hate for the color of my skin and my lack of "enhancing a diverse environment" in the work place to be valued more than my actual skill set. I'm almost disgusted that I even have to ponder whether or not to fill in the section.

To what extent do employers make a decision based on my race and ethnicity?

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks in advance.

Employers mainly do it to collect information on diversity for outside literature (it's a huge selling point to people on campuses and business schools). Given the trends in corporate social responsibility over the past ten years, publishing information on diversity has simply become more commonplace and it isn't intended to be explicitly used in a discriminatory fashion. Though it may help in the sense that firms are trying to step up their diversity efforts.

For most of them at least, the fine print states that the ethnicity/racial/gender information you put down is kept in a separate file, not attached to your application or associated with you in any way. Companies have to collect statistics on the demographics of their applicant pool for legal reasons, so they need this information, but they don't associate your specific responses with your specific application.

In my current position, we do the same thing - we have to keep track of demographics, but not as they pertain to specific individuals.
